Haven't checked in here yet. 18 right now, in school/work (apprenticeship) with Mercedes Benz in Vance AL. Anybody think I could convince them (MB) to let me get ahold of a Kompressor I4 to put in the Ascona
? j/k I love it so far, and am currently taking a little basic machining classes. (sadly not enough for me to be able to redo my engine by myself without having a shop work on it.) Inherited my 75 Ascona from my grandparents. My g/ma got it from her father (who gave it to her) and she made a trip from west AL to B'Ham in it in a little over an hour (Back when the roads were all 2 lane to it). Sadly, the car gave up the ghost on that trip, I think it was somewhere around 75k. Not that its the cars fault, it was driven hard, and I think somebody half***ed a carb to it instead of the factory FI, I found a carb laying in the trunk with a few other engine accessories.

'72 Opel GT (Sara)
|
The thread title says to tell a story too, so here goes...
I'm 41 and my '72 Opel GT was my first car. I bought it for $3,900 in 1986 from the second owner who was a collector. The first owner was in the military and I know the car was in Germany and Australia based on repair records. I even have the name of the first owner. The Opel GT is the only used (previously owned ) car I have ever purchased. Cars are like pets to me and I just can't bear to part with them once I've had them for a while. My Opel GT's name is Sara named after the Hall and Oates song from the '80s (don't laugh at me please ). Like I said, cars are like pets to me. My Olds Intrigue is named Raven because she is black in color and I like the Edgar Alan Poe poem of the same name. My Solstice is Mina based on the character from Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" (and I like the name and was going to name a daughter that if I ever had another child). I've only actually purchased four vehicles for myself in my whole life and I still own three of them (I had to sell the 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 which was the first new car I ever purchased after graduating from college). That car's name was Nichelle named after Nichelle Nichols who played Uhura on Star Trek (now I'm really embarssing myself).Interesting Car Story (to me anyway): Just last month I was up under the dash replacing the brake light switch and I found a piece of old masking tape stuck to the underside of the steering column. It reads "USA + Lunette". I have no idea what it means but I'm guessing the first owner being in the military may be the USA and he had a girlfriend / wife named Lunette. I also came across a sticker in the storage area recently that confirms the car was repainted in 1982. It has the DuPont paint codes used and the name of the shop that did the work. Wow, I just started typing and ended up with a short novel...

I'm one of the under-represented 25 year olds.
Saw a GT for the first time at 16 in a junkyard. I've got to admit that the headlights were what really interested me in the car. I sat in the junkyard car and thought, "Man, this is a really cool car." Didn't know what it was at the time. My next real GT experience was about 4 years ago. There was a local eBay auction for three GTs in rough shape. It was close to ending and at $15.00. I bid $20.00 just for kicks and ended up winning the auction. They were about an hour away, I drug them home and had enough parts from the three cars to make about one whole one. I had a Mustang GT at the time and traded the Opels off for Mustang parts. Regret it still. Mustang ended up as scrap metal. Fast forward to now. Heard a rumor about a "ran when we parked it three years ago" GT going for $600.00. I convinced my wife that a second car would be a good thing and bought it. $50.00 battery and $150.00 tires later I took it for a spin around the block. I'm really getting a kick out of working on it. Needs a lot to pass safety. Thing I like best is a "ran when we parked it" car that worked out well. Couldn't be happier! -GT/M |

my story!
well I haven't told my story, so here it is...
I'm almost 15 and I was looking for my first car. I first saw a Opel gt in a book of cars for sale. It was black and white, could barely see it, but I wanted to look and see what kind of car it was. Well I looked on the internet and saw it and I fell in love with the car. Next I found this website, posted 1 million wanted ads and finally I bought a 69 Opel Gt for $1,200. My dad and I are now currently fixing it. The car runs but it needs a new exhaust fitted underneath. The car looks nice and I'm never selling it!!!!!

I'm 17 years old, and I'm basically rebuilding a '70 GT. I have to do a lot of interior work. My dad and I have stripped the interior all the way out(minus the dash and some of the electrical) and we're gonna have to put some sheet metal in the floor to cover up some holes, and fix some spots in the frame. I'm going to get it painted at the Tech. school I go to, and get it in running condition before I do anything else. It's going to be a while(
), but I'm hoping within the next 6 months to get it running once again. The last time it ran was probably about 20 years ago, so we're going to have to get some of the bugs out.Shaun |

I'm Terry...I'm 59 in one month and I used to have a '73 Opel Wagon, bought new in Burlingame, Ca, in June of '73 for $2700. My X got it in the divorce in '76 and ran the legs off that car....I sure miss it...
I worked for the Buick dealership that I purchased the car from, while I was in high school...I got to drive all kinds of Opels...I got a kick out of the '62 Kadette...not fast, but good mpg and fun to drive. Does anyone know where I can find one? In '04, I went to Europe..Austria, Germany, Italy. In Saalfelden, Austria I visited an Opel dealer and saw all the new cars on display...I really like that new GT(same as Saturn Sky roadster and Pontiac Solstice). I think you meant a '62 Rekord. This car was powered by a completely different 1.7 OHV engine, in use since 1939, than the post '64 1.0/1.1 OHV powered Kadetts. The even later 1.5/1.9 CIH engine wasn't even offered here until 1968.

Missing my OPEL
I am 32 years old and had a '70 Opel GT in high school. It was my first driver. I actually got my drivers lic. in it. I am now hoping in the near future to build a shed and get another Opel GT.
I REALLY MISS MY OPEL!!! |

The better half of opeling here, keep them safe and drivable and keep Tim the toolman under at least partial control. This poll doesn't list ages does it? That wouldn't be very nice. Can I take my answer back? Good men never ask and polite women rarely tell.

Age & A Story
I'm 41, Walked in to my Dad's body shop one day after school at the ripe old age of 15, Took one look at the GT they were restoring and fell head over heels. Dangerous thing for a daughter of a salvage yard owner. There are currently 12 Opel GT's here on the lot for parts. And another one on the way from California. I run the office for the Automotive Recyclers of MA and I take alot of ribbing for the Opel fetish. I Thank God my husband has a sense of humor.

Just turned 40 in June and I still think typing that is worse than saying it.
I learned in an Opel early in life that a curious little black button on the dash could make it lurch forward into a workbench in Dad's garage! Dennis C~ |
