Im old enough to know better and young enough not to care. LOL!(36)

Hi everyone,
I have loved Opel Gts for most of my life. I found an Opel in my local home town when I was 20 yrs. old for $400.00 that was running and in good shape. I told my husband and family that I was going to buy the car. My family needless to say talked me out of getting the car. I have kicked my own butt for that for years. My husband is still trying to make it up to me now. LOL!
Needless to say I have a 1969 Opel Gt and will be getting a 1970 Opel Gt in a couple weeks. Now my husband loves these cars like I do. Like they say... You cant have just one.

You young guys in your 60s aren't even close! I'll just say that my first Opel was a '54 Rekord which I bought in '59 while I was in grad school. I then bought a nearly new '61 Rekord, and when that was destroyed by a tornado, I got a '66 Kadette. Then there was the so-called Opel built by Isuzu which my daughter drove for several years. Currently there is a GT sitting out which needs to be brought in, and I recently bought a '62 Rekord coupe which should be arriving in several weeks. Bill

First opel

I'm 48, but my 11 year old son talked me into getting a '71 GT to build for him when he turned 15. I got the car in August of 08 and since then, we have enjoyed working on the car every week-end that we are able to. This is one project thats worth every penny invested because I never spent time helping my father on cars and to this day, I regret it.

I am 41 and bought my first Opel in 1987 while in high school. I picked up a 1973 Manta for $300.00. I bought it to keep my Studebaker off the streets during the winter. I never though a car would be so much fun to drive. Since then I have owned 4 Manta's and they kept me mobile during the early years. Drove them for about 8 years and finally sold the last one about 10 years ago. Well I needed a econo car to get to and from work and tried to figure out what to buy. Did not want to spend much and most newer econo cars are front wheel drive, yuck! So it all went back to the Opels. Picked up a 1975 1900 (Ascona) for $300.00, how ironic. At least I know how to work on them. Glad to see a great forum for support this time though. George.

For the post below. These are just before it went in to be restored. Hopefully it will be on the road again this year. Only pretty then.

as old as my tongue, older than my teeth!

I'm 49, I've owned a number of Opels in the past, the last previous was a 72 GT, currently it's a 73 Manta Blue Max that I'm restoring. I've also owned a 74 Manta, 75 Ascona Wagon, and 70 GT, and too many others that I bought for parts and junked, oops, I mean, had recycled. I've been around long enough to have owned most of every German Make of car made, with the exception of Porsche, and I need to say that Opels are great cars. Its too bad GM had its head up where the sun don't shine for too long to know how to market them in U.S. past the 1975 model year. I think GM may ultimately pay the price for that mistake and many others, by losing much of its world holdings. Too bad, they coulda been a contender! Thanks for Opeling, GeneMak1

I'm 45. Started in 1979 with a '73 Manta. Drove that until 1990 when I took that car and two '74s apart and put one good car back together. Drove that until frame rot forced her retirement in the mid-90s. Bought a '74 automatic, converted it to 4-speed, and never put it on the road until three years ago, when my son and I refurbished it for his daily driver. Along the way, around 2003, I bought a '72 Rallye that is currently awaiting restoration in my garage. I'll be starting that when the Getrag conversion on son's car is finished (tomorrow, I hope).

I found it very interesting how many were in the 18-21 age range. I guess I figured that age would be working on their Hondas and Scions and the like.

Nice, I just turned 34 and I'm doing the same thing, except I'm the son and I think it's a great way for some father son time.

A lot of those in the 18 - 21 age range are now about 5 years older.

About time for a NEW poll.

T-6 driver is on a distinguished road
I'm 33. I bought my first GT (a '70) when I was 15. It came with some news letters that Ed Tolosko?? published in the late 80's and early nighties. I corresponded with him many times before he passed away. I sold my first car to pay for my first year of school. It was a beautiful polo green with tan interior. I bought my second while attending school, sold it before I got into the Air Force (traded it for a jet kinda thing). I bought my third in 2004, and built a car that I did not want to part with. A screaming 2.0 after the R. Bob recipe, (TYVM R. Bob) and just sold it. I have another 72 in my garage, and I have no idea where this insanity will take me. Unfortunately, my 8 year old daughter now has the disease and wants to know when she can go for a ride in dady's next race car?
