My car Paint Poll
I am torn right down the middle with this poll and it is killing me! So I am going to get 100 opinions from everyone and anyone I know and which ever one comes out I am going to get it that color. Now my 1973 Opel GT will hopefully be painted before carlise....(I am going). So this will be the newest painted Opel you will see !Anyways, the colors are black, and red with white stripes. Reasons for black is because it will make the chrome look hella good. and reasons for the red with white stripes is because it just polain ol' makes it look bad ***. Hope I get a good amount of responds on the poll. I need 100! Thanks Spencer |

I voted Black...I'm a sucker for black GTs. I think black highlights the curves of the car. Also, you see a lot of red (or reddish) GTs but not as many black ones so it really makes it look a little more unique. You're correct in that it really makes the chrome stand out as well. I posted a pic of my previous GT, which was black as well.
It'll be interesting to see how your poll goes! Todd

Paint color
Black is very nice, looks killer if the body is straight, if you paint it black just be perpared to wash and wax it a lot and if it doesn't have AC be prepared to sweat a lot. Lay in a good supply of ebony (gets the swirl marks out) and a good supply of towels to wipe sweat and ride in style

I have always thought about doing two white stripes about 4 inches wide off center, maybe going over the hood bubble. I am trying to remember where I saw them long ago, but have always liked the look of off center stripes. Maybe it was old Racing GT40's or Racing Jaguar D's?

Black's tough to do. It can be the nicest color, or the worst color, depending on execution. Personally, I've only seen one black GT that truly made me stop and stare. Most of them are sub-par (hey, just my opinion!). If the bodywork is perfect, and the paint well-applied, and then wetsanded and buffed correctly, it can look like a million bucks. But if any of these credentials are left out, it can look amateurish, and will highlight the bodywork (bad more than good). Plus, at least IMO, it does not do the GT body justice, a lot of the details/curves/bodylines are hidden unless you are viewing the car in absolutely ideal lighting conditions.
And you will have to get used to washing it....a lot. JMO! Bob Last edited by RallyBob; 03-29-2006 at 12:30 PM. |

as bob says the body has to be perfect for black to look right , then just to keep you on your toes it is the hardest colour to keep clean ,every bit of dust ,mud or much stands out like s**t on a barn door

This is very true of any black car...Similarly, WHITE is the color that best hides bad body work and paint...and dirt!
On black GTs, some striping on the curves can really bring out the accents.

Alright thanks for some more input, I never thought about the bodywork standing out depending on the color and I am glad that was brought up, gives me one more little thing to think about on this decision!

I love black, can ya tell? I'll be repainting my GT black with yellow stripes. if you're looking for a good black to start with try Mercedes black and dont skimp on the clear coat. Also a nice Dodge purple looks good too, I'll be at some tome getting a Kadett Wagon and painting it Dodge purple with white stripes like my GT.

As already said by others, a black car has to be perfect to look really good. And it has to be clean, always. But when it is, it is very beautiful. Especially when it has some chrome too. I`ve had two black cars, so I have washed and polished a few times. I`m afraid black would hide some of the gt`s curves, and I think sports cars and red belong together. My GT is red without any stripes. I voted red. Just my opinion.

What amazes me is how some black paint has red colorant in it and some reds have black colorant in them....never would have known.

There is one bad thing about red, it fades in the sun, it gets a white wash look over it.
if you want a color that hides dirt on the car, use Silver or the Monza Blue [both metalic] but that's my opinion

I really liked the dimensions of the stripes on JJ 70 GT's new acquisition. Not too wide and spaced just right. Someone else on here had some nice 3-part stripes (one wide stripe bordered by pin stripes. So many different ways you can go Spencer, so just go with what pleases YOU best... afterall, you'll be the one driving it!

I put my vote in for black...not that I don't like red GT's or even red with white stripes, but there are quite a few red GT's that a well done black one really stands out. You really cannot go wrong either way, though.

Although not one of your choices, I think SILVER looks fantastic on the GT. Really makes the curves stand out. If I were to redo the Conrero I'd make a silver version with flares. Silver with 2 red stripes....mmmmm
