Old Mini or New MINI

I have a new MINI Cooper S, and my Opel GT could never keep up with it, of course the MINI is modified and the Opel is not, and the MINI is 3 years old and the Opel is 35 years old, so that may have something to do with it.

I got my butt handed to me in an inpromptu race with a modified (original) Mini-Cooper while I was driving a mildly modded Manta. The 6" wide fender flares and 15" x 8" wheels should have tipped me off....

Turns out the car had a Porsche 911 engine stuffed in the rear of the car. Went like hell in a straight line, and even outcornered my Manta.

Because it was like listening to Liberarce (sp) playing the Piano, beautiful as long as you didn't have to look at it Original Mini's were motorized boxes that carried people from one place to the other, functional but ugly and plain with no frills. They served their purpose very well, cheap basic transportation, easy to work on and cheap parts. It was the British VW if you will, and very popular for that reason, but you couldn't drive it with your eyes closed

I'm not slamming England, it's just not the same driving conditions as the US. Back in the dark ages before I knew that I was not invincable, I rode Motorcycles and I had some that was very fast (Royal Enfield and a Areiel square Four) Thought about a Vincent Black Shadow but liked the sound of the Aerial better. English Motorcycles were head and sholders above anything in the world at the time. And like I said the Mini-Cooper would give you the most bang for your buck (or quid) wheather bone stock or modified. They just were not for the American market at the time they were being produced. The few that did make it to this side of the pond met with cool reception and therefore parts and service cwere at a premium.
