Tom Drake's Opel GT has consistantly been the fastest GT-4 (and now GT-Lite) Opel out there. I took some pics at his shop last winter.

Here what I am starting with. The first pic is of the cage that came with the car. That has been removed already.

A street driven GTL car?

I don't think that is possible, in fact I am pretty sure it is impossible.

I am in the middle of a GTL/FP convertion of my ITB car, and it is not for the faint of heart or wallet. I am not doing some things that will make me illegal in FP, so I can have options open, the classes are in a state of flux and who knows where things will be by the time I get this thing finished. I fell into some SCCA rule changes once, they screw with the rules again and I will just run the thing in SP or nasa.

I ran my ITB Opel GT for two years and it was much more of a...."challange"....then running my Toyota in ITA.

RallyBob, I was under the impression that Drake never made the changes he needed to to change his car over from the old GT-4 rules to GTL, I was thinking he was running as a SP car only a few times a year to keep his lic. up. Did he make the change? I hope so, it would be nice to see more out there.

I am out for one more season, then I can start on things again, hopefully some Opel racers will make it up to RA this year...sprints and the runoffs at the same track, it might work if it is not too cold at the end of the season.

I have been talking to the driver of this car an he only plans on racing it a few times at Road America. He said he basically just wants to say I raced at Road America. He also wants to drag race the car also, and his main concern is to drive the car on the street. Well I am always up for a challenge but I keep end up doing this

Could anyone help me with this and being it has a V6 Turbo takes the car out of GT class. Where will this car fit ?? NASA ??? Do they have anything to offer ???

He did run it this year in GTL form. It was pretty sad, that damn restrictor basically undid 15 years worth of engine R & D. He now essentially has an $8000 engine that makes as much power as a strong street 1.9 with a 38 DGAS Weber. It's things like this that pushed me towards NASA.

Well I have been talking to the driver an he is not willing to give up the turbo.

So I really dont know where this car will fit.

SCCA is out the way I see it.

NASA is the only thing I think of right now I am waiting on a return call from them.

Anybody have any ideas.

I am leaning that way as well, or perhaps vintage. If I go vintage I will have to toss out my big engine as well, but things seem to be much more stable over there.

There is not much in the way of NASA or realy any vintage group where I am at, so I am kind of stuck with SCCA if I want to stay close. I have some time to think on what I am going to do, can't do much of anything for another 18 months.

Most vintage classes are pretty liberal. If you don't run away from the pack and it looks period correct from the outside, you can usually run it. Webers, period-correct ignition, no fancy electronics. Most don't care what's inside as long as the racing is close.

Well, if it has a V6 turbo then it probably won't fit anywhere. Definately not SCCA, but it may fit in NASA somewhere. Check the NASA website, their classification system is really complicated and it looks like any engine swaps have to be preapproved. It sounds more like a track day car. If you want to seriously go racing you should pick a series and study the rules and build a car according to the rules of that series. Much better than showing up with something unique and being told you can't race it. If he just wants to say he raced at Road America that's easy. Just rent a race car and do a race. As far as building a GT class race car that he can also drag race and can be driven on the street? Yeah, good luck, don't see it happening. Those are some mutually exclusive parameters.

Basically thats what he wants to do is just say he raced his car at Road America. I how ever am the the lucky one that is building this very unique car. The Opel is a awsome car by all means but I have never had a project more challenging. I will post up some pics on Friday.

Look at the Welcome to the Midwestern Council Family of Sports Car Clubs . They have a UR or Un class
for cars they do not meet any spects.

If he wants to acutally race it, there are 3 vintage events at Road America in 2009; the SVRA weekend May 15-19, Kohler Challenge (I believe follows SVRA specs) on July 16-19, and the VSCDDA on Sept. 11-13. I've attended the July vintage races several times over the years, and it is a truly spectacular weekend of vintage racing and concours events. If he just wants to drive his car at Road America, he could run in the touring session, where you pay a $75 fee, pass a basic inspection, and you can run laps on the race course with your street car. This is not racing, but is a much less expensive option than a full race-prep. Here are some pics I shot at a recent RA touring session (I think this was '07) to give you an idea of some of the types of cars folks run for touring.

Put a number on the door, hood and rear deck, some racing stickers and your all set!
Much cheaper and he can still drive "Race" it on the road, circle track, roadcourse, drag strip.........

Kidding aside, Clubs rent tracks all the time. Just find one and run the Opel a few fun laps at Road America or where ever.
Not sure if he will be a racer after 20 laps, but he will be happy.
