    Type A info

I'm looking for information on a Kadett 'A'. I'm in the process of getting a '64 from my childhood that will need a bumper to bumper restore so I'd like to learn all I can up front. It would be great to take it back to original condition, but I realize I may be in for an engine swap, etc. Anyway, what can you all tell me?

Welcome to the best automotive site, or any site on the web. There is a search engine accessible on the top blue menu line. You can use it for any question you may have about your Opel. If you can't find the answer to your question there, then by all means go ahead and ask the general membership and they'll be glad to assist. One thing that is requested, is to use the correct forum for your question. The forums are set up in the same order as the factory service manual, and if your question is about a specific model, kindly use that forum. Again welcome aboard and lotsa luck in your restoration. BTW, there are some commercial Opel parts sources available, just check out the site and you'll find them.

Welcome to this Great Opel Site!

Kadett "A" types are now few and far between - there are not even many "B"s about as most were inexpensive wee cars that just got driven till they rusted away or wore out. The small OHV pushrod motor they have was made for many years though - right through from the 1.0 Litre motor in your 1964 Kadett up till the late 1980's as 1.2 Litre versions in Opel Corsa's and Nova's in Europe. There are still parts about but they take a bit more hunting for than parts for GTs or 1.9 Litre motors. I have a 1967 Kadett "B" and Rodney (Killer Texas GT) has been most helpful in finding hard to get parts from his contacts in Europe.

Here is a link to a recent thread to give you some idea how nice a restored one can be (not mine - unfortunately!) :

From what I'm seeing (and not seeing) thus far this could be a tough project - all the good ones are. I appreciate the replys and info and you can expect to hear from me with plenty of questions as time goes on. One quicky that just crossed my mind: how interchangable are parts with later model Kadetts and other Opels? Engines & transmissions? front end swap? wheel cylinders?

    Thanks.

On the left side of the screen on the home page you'll see the Opel Tech Center, under that heading is a Parts Interchange, about 20 pages of all the Opels, including Izusu. You can use this to determine which components can be interchanged between the different years and models. HTH.

Lots of interesting stuff in the Interchange Manual but I'm not picking up on how to determine what changes with what.

Also, what's the Opel/Isuzu connection (I'm new to the world of Opel)?

Your 1964 Kadett will have a 1.0 litre motor. Most all the parts except the pistons (which are bigger in diameter) with interchange with the 1.1 litre parts used in 1967 and later Kadetts and in the Early GTs with 1.1 litre motors .. all about 348 of them! The some of the 1.1 litre gearboxes will also interchange. See if you can find a "1964-67 Opel Kadett Parts Book" on EBay - it is very useful as it lists all the parts for these cars. It has those words in red writng on a white cover and is an original Opel/Buick produced book.

Opel/Isuzu 'took over' in 1976 when GM ceased importing German Opels into the U.S.A. GM started to source their 4-cylinder cars from Isuzu in Japan (also a GM company) in 1976 and just traded on the cudos of the Opel name - They are NOT "OPELS" but Japanese Isuzus! Strangley enough Isuzu also sold 'real' German Opels in Japan - I have a couple of 1991 Opel Senators which were brough to New Zealand from Japan were they were sold new as Isuzu's Top-of-the-Line cars. Isuzu just stopped selling German Opels in Japan this year (they sold something like 1441 Opels last year) when GM sold all its stock in Isuzu back to the Japanese...... GM stopped Isuzu making cars in 1992 and concerntrate on 4WD and diesel trucks.

Look in the member lists under K there are a bevy of kadet owners, also look through the pictures of events and see who owns the other kadets. No doubt the purists will howl but going with a 1.9 is also an option. There is an ample supply and they cheap. You are stuck for suspention bits but I am sure there must be some swapable parts from the other models...

    Kadett Thread

Here is a real good Kadett 'small' motor rebuild Thread that may be of interest.

You are the first person I have found in the u.s. that has an A model.
My son has been trying to get the parts togather to restore his '65 m34 for about 5yrs.
I (we) would love to hear about yours.
    is it a m31 sedan, m32 coupe or a m34 wagon?
is it complete, damaged or rusty?
    Do you have pictures?
    how about spare parts?
If you would like to talk you could e-mail me
