    SD1 Axle

    Hi friends,

Now, I'm ready to work on my rear axle !!!
So, I want to use a Rover SD1 axle as you know.
A guy told me a need a SD1 VItesse one, but the ratio is 3.08:1...it's to long for a 6 speed gearbox.
I know the 2400 TD and 2000 manual have a ratio of 3.90:1, but I don't know if I can use them...if mecanicaly it's the same!

    regards

    Many Made

Here is some info about where they went to new:

Only a few months later, in April 1982 (and only for export at first), the 2400SD Turbo version was also introduced, this using a 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel four-cylinder engine, manufactured by VM of Italy. Aimed specifically at certain European markets, this was a 'tax-break' model for those markets like Italy which put operating economy ahead of performance: although the engine only produced 90bhp, it produced lusty torque, a top speed of 103mph, and fuel economy of better than 30mpg. Automatic transmission was never available in the diesel-engined car.

    SD1 Production Figures: 1976 - 1986
Rover have never been able to provide completely detailed production figures

Choosing from several Rover sources, these are the approximate production figures for every significant model:

    Four-cylinder types:
    2000cc 20,554
    2400SD Diesel 10,081
    Six-cylinder types:
    2300/2300S 42,996
    2600/2600S family 108,572
    V8-cylinder types:
    3500/3500SE/3500VDP 107,916
    V8S 1,040
    Vitesse 3,897
    VDP EFi 1,113
    Total of the above 296,169
Nevertheless, when all CKD assembly is considered Rover state that a grand total of 305,139 cars of this type were produced in ten years.

A big search - but there must be a few parked behing motor shops around Europe still.

Just looked on Rimmer Bros web site - about GBP400 for a rebuilt diff - without axles, admittedly .... but expensive?? Well priced I would say!
You don't need the axles for your GT conversion and that price is for 3.90/3.54/3.08/2.84 - any ratio you want. You will need a torque tube though.

Fot an extra GBP667 you can have a Quaffie Limitied Slip Unit included ....

Here is a diff on eBay.UK:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MGB-Axle-Rover...QQcmdZViewItem

A bit 'cheaper' but unknown condition and who knows how many kms ??

GT diff rebuilds are not inexpensive - GBP1,500 plus range for a full rebuild - at least!

    Thanks for all guys!

I shall make an order to Rimmer, but to be sure, here is my last question:
I can buy axle with the followed ratios:
    3.08:1 or 3.84:1 or 3.45:1 or 3.90:1

Here are the ratios of my 6 speed gearbox:
    1st: 3.827
    2nd: 2.360
    3rd: 1.685
    4th: 1.312
    5th: 1.000
    6th: 0.793

what is the best axle ratio I have to use ? of course to keep the car FUNNY!

My first idea was 3.90:1 but maybe it will be to short.
    What is yours.... 3.45:1 ???

    Similar Dilema

    3.90 X 0.793 => 3.1 effective diff ratio in 5th gear overdrive

    3.54 X 0.793 => 2.81 effective diff ratio in 5th gear overdrive

I tend to think that with the GT 3.90 (3.1 effective) would give a higher actual top speed than 3.54 (2.81 effective) which may be just a bit "long" for our tiny motors - even 2.4L ones!

There is - somewhere - a method of working out 'best' ratio using engine power, car weight, tyre diameter etc. etc. .... must see if I can find it again ....

    HTH

PS: I am using the 3.89:1 gears from an Isuzu Piazza (Impulse) diff - but have the original 3.44:1 GT ones there if they prove too "short" and I need more "legs"

Whateva - the GT will be a demon off the line in the lower gears with 3.9:1

Ok, it's done I've made the order today. Iy will be a 3.90:1 rear axle.
The maximum speed with my 6 speed gearbox, will be +-205 km/h

Baz, the shipment price is not to high so Rimmer will send it to me.

    regards friends.....
