Sounds like the impeller has been forced on too far or the incorrect bearing used in manufacture.
If the pump is Ok you could just grind off the sticking out bit of the shaft with a disc grinder - a bit at a time and cooling it down between grinds so the seal does not get overheated.
Water pumps are one of the things each Opel owner needs to keep instock for themselves or be prepared to wait a day or two for delivery.
OGTS usually has them and can express deliver and they always turn up on EBay as well. Some of the Auto chain stores have them or can get them in a few days.

I have had good luck at autozone buying water pumps, $35 for a duralast pump and they had it instock and the quality seems to be there. I also haven't had any problems with it yet.

Was curious if anyone else had run into this... Yesterday my water pump went out so I decided I would take the one off my parts car. While doing so, I noticed that the housing around the bolt under where the water inlet attaches was broken, and when I removed the pump, it appeard it had been that way for sometime. So, oh well, decided I would have to go ahead and pick one up at O'Reiley's. When taking the one off my running GT, i noticed that it too had at sometime been broken in the same place and did not even have a bolt in that same hole. It had been running fine with no leaks, so thought this to be odd. Is this a common damage done by PO's overtighting this bolt, or just a coincidence?
I just finished replacing the water pump on my 1.9L last night with a used pump from a fellow opeler. I have considered ordering an extra from Advance Auto Parts - they have the following listed:
- ASC Water Pump - New $36.96
- Cardone Water Pump - Remanufactured $37.99
- Cardone Water Pump - New $41.99
- Beck/Arnley Water Pump - New $76.96
From a previous post, it looks like some of these may not fit properly. Is it best to just order from OGTS or USA Opel for ~$60 since they guarantee the right fit?

There are different pump styles sold for the Opel.
My suggestion, is to go with the Beck Arnley
pump because they are made with an aluminum
housing (which matches the aluminum timing
chain cover). They run cooler and resist electrolytic
reaction (which occurs between different metals).
The iron pumps are available for less, but they
are far heavier and this weight at vibration
induces greater bolt stress on the soft timing
cover hole threads, and iron doesn't shed heat as efficiently.
There are two Cardone water pumps listed with Advance. One pump has "A" in front of P/N (A5583151); probably aluminum and two dollars more ($39.99).
ASC Water Pump (New Asc Part Number: WP431) looks aluminum in picture.
The B/A pump only has a 1-yr. warranty; rest are Limited Lifetime, except for Cardone Reman. Go to Advance web site; click contact to send email, asking what water pumps are aluminum?
Well, I bought one from O'Reilly's because it could be here that same afternoon and was only $34.99. I looked it over and compared it to the one I took off, and depth, holes etc seemed to match up fine. I installed it this afternoon, got the radiator back in (gawd I hate reinstalling that bottom radiator mount bolt) and all hoses hooked back etc., turned it over and an awful noise ensued. I checked the waterpump, and you guessed it... not turning! So, after a few choice words I decided I might as well take it off before the RTV sets up and while at it, could check to see how far the bolts had to be turned to loosen it up. So back off with the hoses, radiator etc., but when I got to the fan blade bolts, I noticed it loosened up as soon as the bolts were loose. Took out the old bolts, compared them to my parts GT and noticed they were 1" compared to 3/4". Replaced the 1" with the 3/4", put it all back together again (there's that $@%# bottom radiator bolt again) and all is good. The culprit is some added support on the outside of the pump housing near the flange that was just catching the 1" bolts.

The new Cardone does have a lifetime warranty, but the remanufactured Cardone only has a one year.
Shop Smart.
Shop S Mart.
$59 dollars at Opel GT Source. It will be right the 1st time. It will be on your doorstep the following day. I highly recommend using them.
I got my reman at AutoZone for $36 with lifetime warranty. With how many of these damn things I've replaced I want a warranty!

With GTs proclivity for over-heating the best insurance you can have is to use a new water pump every time it is replaced. Using 'good' 2nd hand ones is an invitation to disaster! Why risk a motor worth over $1K by trying to save $50 ??![]()

I was wrong about my water pump. It is brand new. Not bad for $36 and a lifetime warranty, eh?
