maxx have a read of the posts in the forum i have moved this to
there is loads of info there on what you need to do and what you need to get to change over to a 5 speed

and as every one says , a quick search using the search engine on site will answer most things just takes a little time to work out how to ask the question some times

First you have to find one that hasen't been crushed. Then it has to be good. Lastly if you dont mind the shifter coming out by your elbow then go for it.

Also, there are a couple of different ratios, some of which don't fit the Opel's gearing and power band well. The bell housing has to be modified. But it can be made to work.

    5-Speed Choices ...

    1) Opel Getrag - fitted to later model 2.0L and bigger Opels so bolt up but needs modification to shifter to fit in GTs and for using the S10 clutch.

    2) T-5 Borg-Warner - been used and is a less expensive option but search for the correct type to use and shifter options.

    3) Toyota Celica g/box - not used much over there but a VERY strong box that is used in may conversions here (Jag, MGB, Hot Rods etc. etc.)

The OD 5th gear does make an Opel with engine upgrades much nicer to drive at speed!

    RWD Toyota Gboxes

I have not done an Opel conversion (have an auto GT) but fitted a steel case Supra 5-speed gbox to a Holden Wagon and it worked very well.

Here is a local (NZ) site I found on the WWW with info about the boxes:

    Conversion Components

and another page about the boxes and fitting:

    Conversion Components

LOTS more info on ratios etc. :

The T5 borg-warner (Chevette, S-10 and Astro Van) transmissions are plentiful and less expensive (in this country) than the Gertag. Both need modifications to make work in a GT, the critical part is finding and aquiring the Chevette/ T1000 bellhousing. While it does require a small modifcation to bolt ALL the bellhousing bolt to the Opel block. Four of the six and the two guild pins line right up and it clears the clutch. Chevette and Astro Van have the nearest gear spread to the Opel the S-10 stick comes closest to fitting the GT (Chevette will work in the Manta,Ascona and Kadett) Ideally the hot deal for the GT is a Chevette or Astro Van Transmission with the S-10 Tailshaft/shifter housing. Check out www.flatheadv8.org/T5 swap.htm-40k for gear ratios and years with engine sizes.

I'll have to concur with that. Another item that may come up is the electrical speedo setup on the later model T-5s. FWIW I posted the gear ratios of the S-10 T-5 and Camaro gear ratios in my Willit? Update thread. I will say that first gear with the S-10 T-5 is a real stump puller, and 2nd gear needs to be used ASAP after getting the car to roll. I don't have the speedo working on mine yet, so I don't know what the speed would be in first gear at 5000 RPM, but I don't think it's more than 30-35 MPH, but without a speedo I can't say for sure. HTH.
