Getrag Rebuild Questions?

I've had this tranny question kinda lurking about for a while now. Where do all the new Getrag owners look for info on a matter of rebuilds or what not?
Is there a member here that has been through both 240 and 265s? I know Gill at OGTS is great but I feel bad taking up his time with a lot of questions. Any members here been deep into one of these? Just a concern and yet another project.

I have installed a number of Getrags into my 3 Opels and a few others to boot, but have never had to open one up. I did one time try to put one back together that someone else took apart, and.......
oh my goodness,............... this has to be the most difficult transmission I have ever encountered.
There is soooo much that has to line up at one time. The shifter rod, the main gear & lay gear ugh. After 30 minutes of trying I just shook my head.
I have spoken to Alfa Italia in the L.A. area, and they tell me the 240 Getrags, regardless if its from a Opel, BMW etc., that they are one of the more difficult transmissions to rebuild.
After hearing that from them, plus my experience, I said, 'this one's better left to the experts.
Alfa Italia in L.A. is where BMW dealers send there gear boxes out to.

Thanks Dennis. I was afraid of that. Can you get a full seal kit or rebuild kit for one if your brave or crazy enough to go for it?

I spoke to Gil last year regarding this same subject. He suggested the shop in LA as the only way to go.

Unfortunatly the Getrag I bought had been stored with the front of the tranny down and nothing to keep water from entering the tail shaft and settling on the front bearing and causing it to rust.

I bought a rebuild kit from a company in England for a little over $100 with all the bearings and seals. I found them on the UK Ebay.

Gil described the need to line up seven different things inside the tranny as you are closing it up. This is a very difficult proceedure and best left up to the pros. My attitude is I will spend as much money to send the tranny to this company in LA and have them repair and send it back as I would to buy another one from Gil that he will guarantee as good. So what am I to lose trying it myself? A few days of cursing and swearing in all the languages I don't know and eventually buying one from Gil? Or possibly with some luck from my own mechanical skills I do succeed and rebuild my own and walk around with a swelled head and personality to match for a while.

Well, my wife would tell you I am crazy enough or stupid enough, you pick, but what do I have to lose? I will keep you posted as I will be starting this project in a few months and there will be pictures. And hopefuly not of me picking up a tranny and throwing it in the dumpster.

Mike, if it's just the front input bearing you might get to it from the outside. Take off the piece with the sleeve for the throw out bearing attached to it. then work it out. The front seal has no size marked on it but it's a GM part #90187004. Gill can get you one but it is outside sealed with an anarobic glue (locktight). Good luck

Thanks. I was noticing that when I reviewed the site with the person rebuilding the Getrag, posted earlier. I might as well try that route first as it looks to be the easiest. Then if this solves the problem I will stick to that. If not, then I know what I must do. I am not afraid of this project as it could be very educational, just not something I am looking forward to.

Metric Mechanic is a BMW site that sells & rebuilds Getrags to stock or their specs that make them pretty much indestructible.They go into detail about the weak parts in them & how they designed there own. Since many of the 240 internals are the same, you may be able to purchase parts or even ask them some questions.

I called metric mechanic. They are in Richland Mo.

They will put the 3 seals in the getrag for about 100 if you walk the tranny in. Takes about an hour. He said they use viton seals and have the right tools to put them in square.

He wasnt keen on shipping the tranny there.

They dont sell parts.

Hmmm. They won't sell parts, They won't let you send the tranny to them, They will only help you if you hand-carry it to Richland, MO.
How many walk-in Getrag repairs can there be around that town?

Sounds like a business plan designed for failure to me.

Hello All- I have had excellent luck with Jim Blanton- from Blanton Transmissions. Only does Getrags for BMWs but he has done a couple of Opel 240s, A pair of BMW Getrag 265 close ratios that I have used in my GT/E Vintage racer, and a very rare Getrag 235 off a Vauxhall Rally Car that I am installing next in the Opel. Jim is not really quick on the turn around, and he is not inexpensive, but he does Excellent work! reach him at 816/221-8584 or Jim"at"Performancegearing.com. I bought 2 Getrag 240's from Stan Czacki, he told me neither one was any good as they were cores from Gil at OGTS, but that I might be able to build at least one from the two. Well needless to say I was able to get one from the two, and as for the second one a trip down to the local BMW house and with help from a patient parts person going through old micro-fish reels of various years and models of Getrags. I was able to get the parts I was looking for to put the other Getrag on the road.
The parts are not cheap, but they will work as soon as I can find some time to get back to putting the Getrag together.
Sure they are tricky and there are a lot of pieces and parts that have to be assembled just right to even get the two halves back together and patience is definitely a virtue. I know The first I did must have been taken apart at least a dozen times before it finally went into my GT. But it has been flawless for the last 5 years.
