They are just cork, and there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to just use a quality RTV gasket maker instead. Don't even mess with having a gasket made, it's not worth the expense.
Hello friends!
I had an unfortunate thing happen today. The filler plug on my differential had it's allen head destroyed years ago, and as a fix, somebody had welded on the hex head of a 19mm bolt. While trying to open it today to top up the lubricant, the two welded pieces separated and I am left with a stuck plug with no usable head...
I am thinking of taking the whole cover off, take it to a machinist to remove the old plug, buy a new plug (as it should have been done in the first place), and re-assemble.
The local shops though do not stock the cover's gasket anymore... What is it made of, so as to have one made by a "gasket shop"? Is it paper, or something more exotic like permanite for example?
Thank you in advance!

1958 Rekord Sedan, 1958 Olympia Wagon, 1959 Opel Olympia Sedan, 1967 Kadett Coupe, 1967 Admiral Sedan 4L CIH-6, 1968 Kadett fastback 1.1L, 1970 Kadett Wagon Turbo 2.2L, 1971 Kadett Sedan 1.1L, 1975 Manta Wagon 4.3L V-6
Take the two bottom bolts out of the cover, that will allow most of the lube to drain then take the cover off, Opel had two differant pulus, one with the allen socket and one with a 13mm square head. If you can find one the square head is much easier to get in and out and the allen head fills up with road grime and the allen wrench cannot get all the way down in the hole and strips out. RTV Gasket maker is the trick, clean both surfaces good and put the RTV on the cover, allow it to set up for about 5 minutes then install it on the dirff.
It's a 1.0mm paper gasket not cork. Pretty easy to cut out, but they still sell them for cheap here in the U S. I'm sure Jim at Opel USA would be more than happy to send you one.
Thank you all for your replies!
Jim, it is very kind of you to offer to send me the gasket. But shipping costs would be the same (if not more) than to have a couple of them made by a local gasket shop... Thank you very much though, I appreciate it!

I was curious, so I checked shipping. It can go by letter and would be around 4 dollars US and 4 to 7 days. Not bad, really.
Did not think you were overseas (should have noticed )
It could cost about the same depending on what your local gasket shop is going to charge you.
My gasket costs $9.50 and it is the OEM Opel part
I wonder if Global Priorty Mail is $7.00 or $8.00 to get it to you ??
Hey whatever works for you is ok by me
Nobody your so thoughtful and helpful once again thank you for your suggestion.
