Nice Pictures! What Drag Strip (name) and city?
Went to the local 1/8th mile strip today and there was an opel gt. As soon as I saw it I started shaking and had to run back and get some pics of the car. The car is amazing in the pics and even better in person. He has a Boss 302 under the hood. Didnt get many specs on the car as it was a busy day there. His name is Bob Regel, and definately a great guy to talk to. In the 1/8th mile he ran a 6.03 @ 113mph. Decided I would post the pics for all so here is the like...
ps......please lean away from the keyboard as drool is not good for it....

Beautiful! I don't think we've seen this one before, I hope a picture will be added to that thread that shows other known examples of such cars.
As I went through the shots of it sitting at the line, I kept hoping the next one would show it launching. You know, rear tires straining, front wheels in the air. That would be a great illustration of what 6.03 in the eighth starts out as!
Nice looking....but a GT powered by Ford...Blasphemy!!
Yeah. I wasn't gonna be the one who said that first, though. Just think what the ET would be if he was running a Z28/302, or an LT1/350, or heck, let's get carried away, how about a modern LS series engine?
That is a stretched wheelbase car which makes it run a lot straighter, I have only seen one other Ford powered GT it had a 460 big block with a single 4 barrel and was also stretched about 12 inches. I don't know this guys story but the 460 powered one ran 8:80 153MPH in a quarter and the reason it was Ford powered, the owner worked at a Lincoln-Mercury dealership and got a lot of help on parts from them![]()
While it's not a GT if you want to see an Opel with the rear tires straining and the front wheels in the air, look in my member album at the black & white picture of "Bodacious". That is with a .060 over 1.9 with a single Holley 500CFM two barrel and yours truly at the wheel back in the day before bracket racing screwed up Drag Racing.
Yes, I am so aware of Bodacious, and to see that done with something that close to "stock" just tickles me!
As for bracket racing screwing up real drag racing, I agree. Look at what I'm doing in circle track racing. When there is no rulebook enforcement there next is no adherence to rules, the cheaters just laugh and say "it's just for fun". Okay, so let's have fun. Cheating on an oval is quite similar to bracket racing, anything goes, huh? As long as we're having fun and the crowd is enjoying it and nobody is getting killed.
The 500 Holley tickles me, too! Our rules specify 350 CFM max, so we will be borrowing the 500 Race Demon off the Limited car at least once. Gotta try it, it could work, you know, Just For Fun.
Thanks for livening up my favorite website with something interesting. It has been kind of boring and eerie lately. Finally there's something I can be in on. Was feeling so left out lately, and here I am so close to the 2000 post mark...

Oh, but the best is reserved for Frank Mazi,s creation in the late "70's...do a web search for Frank and Linda Mazi's blown Opel GT...SWEEET!!
Another GT in drag racing, NHRA competition eliminator, is Allyn Armstromg. In June at Englishtown N.J. he made it to the final round, 8.82 et 150 m/h. 4 cylinder, 160 cubic inch motor.

Ah..someone else who knows my favorite car! Back in the 70's when the ex and I were drag racing for fun and excitement, we spent every weekend at Quaker City Dragway in Salem, OH. "The God of Hell Fire" was my absolute favorite car to watch. Blown, small block hemi in an Opel GT!
It was my reason for building my pink Opel V8!

P.S. Frank's daughter is currently one of the top drag racing photographers in the country.

Frank Mazi, in a short wheelbase, stick shift, high HP Narrow GT was a show in itself. I know why it weighted 2700 pounds, more than likely 100 of so of those were in a sack (between his legs)I bet he was real busy in that unit because he had to drive it from the time it launched til he got it stopped (hopefully at the other end after completing a pass

While he didn't have an Opel, "Wild Willy" Borsch would put on a show that was hard to forget. AA/FA "Winged Express" short wheelbase, nitro burning winged Altered. Car ran 7:60's at 200MPH in the 70's on 10 inch wide rear tires that he would smoke the whole quarter mile with a high gear only blown Hemi. I have seen him sideways in the eyes (between the first MPH light and the win light driving with one hand and holding onto the roll cage with the other.
Frank's best description of this car was it had two moods...bent out of shape, or just about to get there
I just got this off the Maritimes drag racing forums, dated July 26th:
'The little white NHRA recordholding L/A 1972 Opel of Allyn Armstrong has been sold to current Comp Eliminator racer Charlie Greco from Beryn, PA. Allyns son Doug told me that the "OLD FELLA" might by himself a boat and go do some fishing.'
So we may see another drag racing Opel GT in PA soon!
Bob
I remember Willy Borsch and his altered, touring with 3 other altereds back around 1970 or so.
Wouldn't have missed his visits to TriCity Dragway in Freeland Michigan. One of the other altereds was called"RatTrap" driven by Don Green.I believe it had a bantam body.Sox and Martin ruled Pro Stock then also!
to an old thread... i just found the site adn posted up in the introduction area here is a link to our car...
