W = 897 speedo is listed for manual trans only
W = 1062 is the one for both manual and auto trans.
W = 1020 is for the 1.1L model
Opel refer to the 'W' as "way speed" - it is the number of turns the speedo cable makes per mile travelled.

What they say is true.
My 4 speed has a W=1062
My Auto also has a W=1062
I also have a spare W=1062

Just bought one on German eBay (in kilometers). It shows W660 on the back. Interesting...

Here is a thread on speedo info

2.4 "Legere" Stroker - Weber DCOE45 - Getrag - Compufire - S10 Clutch
Just figured it out:
For the speedometer showing miles W=1062
1 mile = 1609 m
1 km = 1000 m
1062:1609=X:1000
X=(1062*1000)/1609 = 660
My W660 speedometer will work fine with the existing drive gear.
Now why all this trouble? Because we are using kilometers in Canada, not miles. And because the car with the speedometer showing 240kmh looks sooo much better than the one showing 150mph!![]()
The best I can work out is that for the earlier 1969-70 GT gearbox with the angle drive gizzmo for the speedo cable on the g/box ... must have a different speedo drive ratio. The later auto and manual boxes use the 'blue' plastic gear - I think the earlier ones use the 'red' plastic gear.
