If you're asking about a stripe for a Manta, you can go to Allgemeines aus der Opel Manta Szene !!! Kleinanzeigen und noch vieles mehr !!! and get some ideas. As for GTs, just browse the photo gallery.
I thought this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it with the search function. I'm finally painting my racecar, and have decided I want to put the rally stripe down the side, anyone have any good pictures? I had a bunch, but they are all on my old computer.
Thanks,
Dave

This is a timely question for me also as I am getting near(er) to getting my 69 rallye kadett painted. I thought the side stripes on the rallye kadett were painted on. But I read a post a while back that suggested they were tape. What is correct for the rallye kadett stripes? painted or tapes? I also recall a discussion about the tone of black paint for the hood. It of course isnt glossy but didnt think it was flat. Nor did I think it was the typical inbetween semi-gloss. That doesnt leave much else though does it? What is the correct black for the hood? Thanks.

Tom;
I ran into this same thing about the hood, when the Wagon was being painted. Here's the thought you need to be thinking, unless they have come up with some razzle-dazzle new flat black paint, if you get the slightest amount of wax/polish on that flat black, it will not come out, and you'll have to deal with the chaulky white that got on it. I opted for a semi-gloss that can be waxed/polished. As for the side stripes, vinyl is cool, but, unless taken care of, will soon dry, crack and peel and when you wax/polish, you have build-up on the edges. My personal opinion, paint them on.

I just went out and looked at my 69 Rallye Kadette and it appears my stripes are painted on and they look to be semi-gloss. The hood is a flat black paint.
On my Rallye Manta the stripes were tape and I was able to peal them off with a razor blade. But when I went to have the hood painted it was explained to me that if you paint it flat black then put a clear coat on it it will still look shiney defeating the purpose of the flat black so mine is a gloss black.
Maybe those more versed in painting know of a way you can use modern paint and come up with a flat black look can help you further.
Mike
I believe there are flat clear coats for this purpose that still offer the protection of the gloss clear coats.

You can add a flattening agent to any paint or clear coat to obtain the desired finish. You will need to spray some test panels to gauge the results and adjust the mixture until you achieve the level of gloss you're looking for. Any automotive paint supplier should be able to provide it.
I used it years ago when I shot my Manta Rally in DuPont Centari.

As a side note, you can wax over the black paint without any issues if you use the method described above.

I believe the Kadett Rallye side stripes are stick-on, as the replacements are. They may be on there so good after years it seems they are painted on. Also if the car was repainted, they may have painted it on.
Keith
I went back out and looked at my Kadett. They might be stick on tape but if they are they are of great quality. Though in some areas they are greatly faded down to the paint underneath. The paint looks origonal as it is faded as a car 38 Years old would look in the Arizona sun.
Of course down here in Tucson we can sand a car down to bare metal in the middle of the summer and come back in two months and the sun has actually burned off any residual paint left on the car. I think I could set a rusty part down in the sun and the rust will disappear as no rust is allowed down here.
Just kidding,
Mike
Mike it sounds like yours are definitely paint then. The hood was flat on my 69 while the stripes looked more like semigloss as they definitely didnt look flat. Of course all the paint is gone as I had it dipped. I dont get this difference of opinion or understanding about whether they were painted or taped. I made a post about this several months back and the same thing happened, both answers. Maybe Opel did both??

This is a picture of someones car at 2006 Carlisle, don't know if this is what you are looking for.

No Jeff, we are talking about the stripes and hood on the kadett rallye models. The hood paint looked flat while the side stripes looked semigloss, as my memory serves me which aint necessarily so good. So before I give instructions to the painter I need to decide whether the stripes need to be painted on or taped. As stated earlier the tape may peel; but I would imagine they are easier to apply.

I would not paint the side stripes on the Kadetts. You can purchase the stripe decals from Reprotec in Germany. I have a set, and they go on just as you would put any vinyl graffic on with transfer paper. They are semi gloss, and I think the reason is, I believe when new-don't quote me-they are almost reflective like the Torino side stripes
Keith
I agree with the vinal decal route. My side stripes are semi-gloss and that is from the factory that way. Once they are painted on if anything is wrong or needs changing you must match everything. With vinal you can take a razor blade and remove the stripe and reapply a new one. I know of a few places in Tucson where the company can draw a stripe on the computer and have new vinal cut to what is on the computer. You can then save the program on a disk and come back and have new pieces cut frrom the origonal program. Many palces that do graffic art with signs have this capability. JMTCW

Harold so that means kadetts were likely painted while mantas were taped.
