    Voltage Regulator

It's a Voltage Regulator (and a cheap aftermarket replacement, at that).
New regulators (and new 3-wire harnesses, connecting to the alternator) are available from Opel retailers.

It is a voltage regulator, so it SHOULD have been attached to the alternator, not the coil. Well, it is bolted to the brake shaft bracket next to the coil, but not attached to the coil. And it is fubared, as the wiring has been short-circuited and is melted

For sure it's an after market voltage regulator, solid state type too and trashed. There is a jumper cable that goes from it to the alternator.
