    fan/alt belt

The computer at my local Kragen lists two different size belts for the same application. Before I go buy both and just see which one fits, does anyone know what size this belt is supposed to be in a 1970 GT? I can't actually find a size in the service manual either, but I may not have looked hard enough. References to the belt say things like "replace belt if necessary", but don't tell you what to replace it with.

I should have mentioned it is a 1.9.

Andrew, if you can, take the original to the parts store and see if you can match it up that way, then keep their number handy for future reference. Just off the top of my head, there may be three different belts for the GT, one standard for the alt/water pump, and one for each of the two types of AC that were options on them. HTH.

Thanks. That was the conclusion I came to, which sucks because it means I can't just do the thing all at once.

I just realized you are in IB. Are you going to Coronado tomorrow?

I hope to, I'm recovering from a recurring back injury, it depends on how I feel in the a.m. I was supposed to have the Car Coral passes in snail mail for all of us to park together, but they haven't arrived. I talked to the coordinator and he said if we all convoy in together it should be no problem. The plan is to meet in the Medical/Dental Center parking lot about 1/4 mile inside the main gate on the right at 8:00 a.m. and go in to the race area from there. My plan to bring in the motorhome got shot down by the race commitee, but I'll have a 10' X 10' pop-up tent I'm bringing, if I don't feel well enough to stay someone will have to get it back to me after the races. This is really off thread but answers your question. From what I've heard there will be about 12-15 Opels and about 20-25 folks there, should be a lot of fun and some good racing. This will be the first time I've been to this event. Hope to get a good turn out and see some good racing. Hope the weather is better than it is now.

    fan belt

I just got one from OGTS-they said the size depends on your alternator bracket.mine takes a longer one..for my 70 gt..I THINK
the longer is for the longer cast aluminum type bracket of an
    alternator.

Fan /Alt Belt Size / Reduction

Note: I wanted to ask this question in this thread but it is closed for some reason.

With the fan belt from OGTS, I have to pull the alternator all the way to the extreme far end of the adjustment bracket to get good tension and even then I get occasional belt squeel at high RPMs (above say 3,500 RPMs). So, I had the idea of dropping down to a belt that is 1/2" smaller (35") than the prior belt (to get better tension on the belt since I need more space in the adjusting bracket). The new belt is on and I seem to have eliminated the belt squeel. However, I notice that now I have decreased the clearance quite a bit between the alternator and the engine and distributor.

My Question: Should I be concerned that there is now a much smaller space between the alternator and the engine? Nothing is actually touching but I'm worried about movement due to vibration as the car is being driven. Note that I am about 3/4" from being farthest in on the adjusting bracket (so I haven't moved to the furthest extreme in the other direction but close). Anyone else drop down a size in fan belt for this reason?

    Thanks for any advice...

    Belt Sizes Vary

It's noted (in the link below), that there were 2 fan belt sizes, which relate to which type of alternator brackets you have on the engine.
