A couple more pics...
Well, I just couldn't find what I wanted for a muffler, so I built my own. I wouldn't recommend this unless you have lots of time and enjoy metal fabrication. I don't think I saved a lot of money going this route...
Here's the deal - I'm running a ported rotary engine in my GT, which means it runs hot and loud! This means using heavy gauge steel or stainless for the exhaust. I tried using off-the-shelf magnaflow stainless mufflers, but they were straight through, and so too loud.
Making a muffler is not rocket science. A lot of aftermarket performance mufflers are just perforated tube with packing in a shell. I used a combination of this and some chambers. This is made from 16 ga stainless, with SS wool packing and perforated tube (good ol' Evil-Bay). I made a case which I could slide the 'guts' in and out of, which allows me to re-pack or change the configuration.
I'm pretty happy with the results, it's quieter and has a better tone than the magnaflow, plus the outlets are where they ought to be. I might put some polished tips on eventually...
Hope someone finds this information useful one day,
jtb
Hi JTB,
Nice job done. It looks good too.
Years ago , I also build my own stainless steel exhaust system. I did rebuild it for a better fit last year.
It is SS, bigger then original, it has a flexible part in it (vibrations).... and it is attached to an opelengine CIH 2.2 injection
It looks like this :

One question... Did you intentionally switch over the red an orange lenses of your GT? Normally the orange ones (blinkers) are on the outside and the red ones (rear lights and stoplights) are on the inside)

JTB, that is some very nice work and it looks great! any chance of a sound sample?

Very nice work! My friend did something almost identical for his Lamborghini/Fiero kit car exhaust years ago, funny how you guys ended up building it almost the exact same way!![]()

I remember those ported rotary engines from my racing days. The noise they were producing was absolutely deafening.
Nice work.
Hi,
Um... intentional, yeah, that's it! Actually, that's how they were when I got the car, so that's how I put them back after paint. I don't know if I have enough slack in the wiring to switch them back now... guess I'll just stay different.
Thanks for the comments. Nice job on your exhaust as well, Geert. If I ran something like that, it would be scraping the ground as my car is quite low. I do have a flex section in mine, right after the header (also stainless)
