Fuel Tank Cleaning

Ok I have removed all the inner parts from my package & spare tire area. I will be removing the fuel tank to clean it out and remove the sock filter.

I have ordered the following parts from OGTS, filler neck hose, tank vapor tubing lines, gasket for fuel tank sending unit, clear fuel filter(for under tank).
Am I missing any parts to replace? And what are the recommendations on what to use as a cleaning agent? I found this link for sealing product http://www.por15.com/product.asp?productid=357 what size do I need to order?

Did your fuel line fitting come off ok? OGTS sells replacements.

I just did this to my GT tank two weeks ago. I used the POR-15 motorcycle kit. One small (1/2 pint) can was more than enough for a GT tank.

By fuel line fitting do you mean the metal tubing that comes off the bottom of the tank and out the bottom to the rubber fuel lines?

I believe the tubing that OGTS sells mimics the stock material which makes sense - a replacement part that is close to the original. However, I have to say that mine started to harden and discolor after just a couple months of use. It was dramatic enough to make me nervous and so I replaced all of my vent tubes with rubber fuel line hose. I can't honestly say that it was going to definitely be a problem but it sure seemed like this material was on its way to deteriorating like the original factory material. I was back there anyway and so it seemed like a good preventive measure. JMTCW for you to consider (there are photos in my gallery for you to look at).

Yes, he is referring to the line off the bottom of the tank. I believe in order to get the tank out easily you should remove the two brackets on the wheel wells. The studs on them stick through the wells into the wheel area and are usually covered with undercoating. You have to remove the undercoat and remove the nuts and then the angle brackets come right off.

mine set for 25 years in a barn with about a half tank on fuel, I removed it and took it to a a shop and they cleaned it and sealed it. easy job for me. 150.00 later

I have pulled my tank, cleaned it, removed sock filter, painted it, reinstalled it and put a new hose to filler neck and reinstalled the venting lines, new fuel lines and two fuel filters.

In the past week our area has been plagued by day after day of temperatures beyond 100 degrees fahrenheit~! Just last night I went out to check my mail and as I walked out I could hear something, like water from a hose! I realized quickly the sound was coming from under my GT and I rushed over to find the new fuel line had become detached and was leaking gas from the tank! Needless to say I fixed it quickly.

My problem is I'm in need of a part QUICKLY to fix this. When I removed the tank to clean and paint it, the "L" shaped metal tube that comes out of the bottom of the tank would not come loose no matter what I did. Unfortunately I had to just saw the piece off to remove the tank. Apparently when I reattached the new fuel line, the clamp that I tightened to the remaining metal tubing did not have enough tube to hold onto anymore and was pushed free under the heat.

Does anyone have one of these spare "L" shaped metal tubes that I'm speaking of that I can buy from them?

OGTS has the whole line and fitting, give them a call and you could have it overnight. They're that close to you.

I had my gas tank boiled out and sand blasted for a mear 50 bucks at a local radiator shop. All my hoses seemed to be replaced before i bought the car so i just clamped them on and havent had a problems since.

Use the black rubber fuel line (5/16'') that you can buy at the auto parts and small fuel line clamps.I've used the clear before and it didn't hold up.This is something that you only want to do one time.Also there is a fitting that has a big and small hole that is only supposed to go one way.

Thanks for the advice. So far the only problem I'm having is that when I pulled the fuel tank, the metal tubing on the bottom of the tank wouldn't loosen. The metal tube has an L shape to it, and without removing the metal tube, the tank wouldn't come out of the car. I had to resort to cutting the tube to get the tank out.

I thought I left enough of the tubing there to attach my new fuel line and clamp. It's too short and didn't hold up. I called OGTS and Dennis said the part is in the new supplemental catalog but they are on back order from Germany.

Does anyone have one of these "L" shaped tubes from the bottom of the fuel tank that I could buy from them?

Several years ago, I refitted my tank with OGTS's clear tubing. I think it is Tygon tubing. On inspection a couple of years later, I found liquid gas in the tube. The tube had swelled and was quite soft. I replaced it with rubber fuel line hose from the local parts shop.

I used steel brake line from the auto parts store.Take a piece in to get the right size and buy a bending tool if you don't have one.The one I have looks like a long spring that slides over the tubing snugly and keeps it from kinking.

Neil, I would suggest you use a penetrant like PB Blaster and get the line and fitting out of your tank, if possible. You can check your local "Yellow Pages" and find a tubing shop, and they can bend a suitable sized line with a compression sleeve and use your old fitting to seal the line to the tank.

I ran a 1/4 npt tap into my tank and used a 1/4 npt x 5/16 (or maybe it was 1/4") flare fitting on my GT. I then bent a brake line to fit. The 1/4 NPT thread is close to the metric one. Just use some teflon tape to make a good seal.

Thanks for the heads up Gary. I bid on that item and was finally outbid by 50 cents! UGHHHHH

Anyway if anyone else out there has the metal tubing that comes out of the bottom of the fuel tank that you can sell me please email me. People have suggested fashioning your own and I thought of that. The problem is the tube has a metal lip on the end of it where it slips into the bolt. I don't think I would be able to replicate this in order to get the correct seal.
