68 Kadett 1500 Rallye

Hi, Ive had this car for 20 years, 17 in the garage sos the body is in pretty good shape. The moter was rebuilt and runs well,17 years ago. The reason it's not been driven is that the transmiison went out and probably needs some work. Any ideas on what it's worth or how difficult the transmission work is on this car?

Without pictures, it's hard to tell. One man's "good" condition may not be the same for another. As for the trans, if you're not mechanically good at rebuilding 4-spds, then just buy a 4-spd from a 1.9 or 1900. Just about every member should have 2-3, so they're cheap, and just swap it out with a new clutch to boot!

If it was mine and I was going to keep it, I would change out the 1500 engine for a 1900 at the same time I replaced the transmission. The 1500 is so slow it will drive you to drink ( I had to sell mine to sober up) The cyl. head is a good cheap fix for a low compression engine (with 1900 valves) and you may be able to make a swap to someone that wants to make that modification to their low compression car. Those engines were only brought to the US that one year (1968) and are kinda hard to find. Also if you make the swap don't use the 1500 carb as the fuel inlet is smaller than the 1900, of course if it has been sitting up that long now is a good time to upgrade it with a Weber 32/36.

Its hard to say-it all depends on condition. I don't car what engine it has in it, but the 1.5 is a 1 year only in that car, which makes it a little more desirable to some. The engine parts are close to 1.9, actually might find pistons easier-who knows. Send some pics keithlundholm@yahoo.com

eBay auction at the moment for 1.1 and 1.5 pistons!

If you want something a little different, keep the 1.5. The 68s are so unique with the 1.5s that I wouldn't want to change it out myself.

As far as the trans goes, I've replaced the transmission by myself in my GT 4 times, and I'm only an Opel apprentice. I do it easily in 2 hours but I'm sure others can do it much faster. Replace that trans and enjoy the car. Especially, with the price of gas nowadays.
