Oh, I plan on being there in a GT, one way or another.
Either the Opel GT that is in the beginning stages of low budget restoration, or the Mustang GT that is much less embarassing to be seen in.

Probably won't be staying the night there because I live close enough to drive there and back each day.

Either way I will be there.
That said... looking at the prices. Driving my 06 GTO there would be fun..

Had lunch with GTRoy today to discuss the trip to Tacoma.

Interstate 5 - Benicia Bridge to Spanaway; 750 miles with 12 1/2 hrs drive time. Maximum Elevation is 4460 ft.

Coast Route - Benicia Bridge to Spanaway; 820 miles with 15.5 drive time. Maximum elevation is 2400 ft.
Roy - If you still plan on retracing our coast route from last year - take 101 north to Crescent City, then take the Redwoods Hwy (199) northeast to Grants Pass and 5 north into Washington.

Here are the elevation profiles of the two routes.

    The 2009 Opel Nationals

Hello Everyone, I am trying to keep our site on the main page for just a bit to give all a glance at the events and Schelude for this years 2009 Opel Nationals. We are lucky enough to have been given this year's event. In so doing we have planned a great time for all who will be attending. Please, go ahead and make your reservations for lodging as soon as possible. There are several events that will be held the same time as ours, therefore rooms are not easy to come by. We have posted the lodging sites, web sites for sight seeing along with times and dates. If you may need any help in planning your trip or events,, please get in touch with us by email or phone Opel JohnB
at 253-581-5372. There will be more phone numbers posted closer to the date of nationals. We are hoping that You all will join us for a great 3 day event. All I can say is that today we went on a motor trip and Both Mount Saint Helens and Mount Rainier were out In clear skyes for all to see. Need I say more?

Oops. Here are the elevation profiles for the two routes from the Bay Area:
    • Interstate 5 to Spanaway.
    • 101 up the coast to Crescent City, to Grants Pass (it's a great road), 5 to Spanaway.
The coast route offers an easier drive for those with 1.1 engines. Although you'll have more mountain driving, the coast route makes for a nicer drive as it has only 1/2 the elevation and easier grades to pull. Plus, the scenery is unbeatable. But don't plan on making a fast trip.

    If you're short on time and have the rear windows that open, Interstate 5 through the Valley sounds like your route. It's fast. But there are three really tough grades;
    1. Just south of Dunsmuir
    2. Then a long hard pull up from the California/Oregon border towards Ashland.
    3. After a short, but moderately steep climb just north of Grants Pass, it's a fairly level shot the last 340 miles to the Nationals.

Well I'll be swapping the "Wasp's" 2.4L into the Manta so I don't anticipate any "elevation" problems. That motor eats grades for breakfast, and the Getrag with the 3.67 rear end, fugetaboutit.

    Gas prices and distance . . .

. . . while I'm still considering going, economics are moving entirely in the wrong direction. For me, it's three long days driving each way, 2900-3000 miles, so it's not looking great at the moment . . . and I don't go to Opel meets without driving an Opel, i.e. no alternatives to the road trip. Just have to wait and see for now . . . sorry.
