OK, I know one of these could also really go in the "Engine Electrical" forum, but there are two parts in question, so I thought I'd post them both in the same thread.
Does anyone know of a source for the ~1" wide canvas web belt material used for the spare tire retention? The bottom 'half' with the clasp is broken and I'm sure it can be fixed like the original if I knew a source for the webbing . . . else, if someone has a good one in a parts car.
Second, still looking for a functional (non-leak) "retard" canister for my early 1.9 dual-canister distributor . . . must be even rarer than I thought! Got it plugged for now, but would like to get it functional to get my "sprint" 'warm' idle speed down a bit.![]()

Hi Otto
I had the same issue with my Kadett so I just used some imagination.
I always thought the spare tire in the trunk looked very plainish so I purchased a vinyl tire cover and it really made the trunk look finished. I went to Walmart and purchased a mens super long leather belt and with some clever cutting and some hidden pop rivets on the bottom and top trunk fasteners the tire is now held into place with the belt and it does look good even tho its far from what the original looked like.
Otto,
its yours free if you pay shipping cost. Never tried out, but the whole thing seems to be fine, including the canisters. Its from my 69 Rallye parts car.
Dieter
Go to a military surplus store and buy some military uniform belts. They are about 1 1/4" cotton web and they came in tan, dark blue and olive drab colors. You could probably also use the buckle as a fastener if necessary.
. . . great idea, Tom! . . . got me thinking a bit further "outside the box" and I thought I'd try some fabric shops here. First one I called actually knew what I was talking about, very encouraging I might add, but unfortunately no longer carried it. Asked them where I might find something similar and they said to try another fabric shop in town, about which I didn't know.
Called them up and, sure enough, they had a whole variety of widths, colors and designs, from frilly/lacy to stout double-weave, just what I needed. Found some 1" wide olive-drab double-weave remarkably like the 40-year old original . . . at only $1.49 a yard!!![]()

. . . stopped by the local "shoe repair" shop - yes, we still have one of those here - right next to Poor Richard's, a local breakfast/lunch place where I've been going since mid-'73, when I moved to Plano. The shoe repair shop has been next door since then too!
Anyway, brought in my broken belt and the material I bought Saturday and asked him about riveting the new woven belt to the buckle to duplicate the original. No problem, had a rotary hole punch for the woven belt and rivets to fasten it together, almost exactly like the original!

. . . Dieter's dual canister dizzy, now mine, arrived yesterday . . . THANKS, Dieter!
I've already removed and cleaned up the "retard canister" and am just waiting for a bit warmer temps outside to install it on my sprint Kadett dizzy . . . WOHOO!!![]()
