Engine swap for 1.1L Kadett B with 1.2 Corsa A

I own 68 Kadett "B" LS 1.1L in europe and was wondering if
a later Opel Corsa "A" 1.2L engine would bolt up to the 1.1L Kadett transmission ??

I would probably have to change the distributor system to a crankfire type but thats ok.

I don't think this will work:
the CorsaA 1.2 has the "OHC" engine with alu head & overhead camshaft,
whereas your KadettB 1.1 has the old "OHV" engine with cast iron head & lateral camshaft (like your R8 Gord IIRC...).
I think only the CorsaA 1.0 was fitted with the old "OHV" engine,
better to find a OHV 1.2 from a KadettC (easy swap in Europe).

Basically Hiro is right. I just wanted to add that you could pair a OHC engine from a Corsa with a Getrag 240 from a Manta B or Rekord E with a 1.8 Liter engine. This is not the "regular" Getrag 5-speed, it has a different bellhousing, fitting the OHC/DOHC line of engines. The gear box has gotten pretty rare, but comes up every once in a while on German ebay and will set you back 500-800 Euro + shipping.

Corsa A engine is a newer engine with 5 main bearings and OHC and thats what is atractive about it.
A couple of years ago I drove a Corsa GT I think it was a 1.3s engine and it went pretty good.
I think it would be the perfect power, with a decent fuel comsuption for the Kadett. Dont forget that in Europe gas is over $2.00 per liter (7.00 to 8.00 US gallon)
I think that if the engine would bolt up to the Kadett transmission I could make it fit, using a crank fire ignition system and electric fan for the radiator.

I am happy enough with the 1.1L Kadett engine but the 3 main bearings scare me a little bit, specially when I have to rev it quite high to maintain the 120 km/h speed limit on the higways, so I usually keep it around 100 to 110 km/h

I also have a question about the rear end, but I will post it in the apropriate

The 1.1L OHV motor has been rev'd to over 8,000 rpm in competition and will happily go to 6,500 rpm on the street for years and years.
Though it only has three main bearings the stroke is very short (61mm - 2.40") keeping stresses quite low.
Enjoy what you have while finding one of the the Kadett C 1.2L OHV motors for a bit more power!

corsa a 1.2 is a ohv engine , it is the same engine like in kadett c 1.2 , only corsa b has 1.2 ohc engine

Some corsa a's did come with 1.2 ohv engines, some with ohc. The ohv engines in the fwd cars do not have the same engine mounts as in the rwd kad c's . The mounting holes on the rwd block are missing from the fwd block but can be drilled as the space were they originally were are still there in the casting. The ohc engines will not mate to the kadett g/box.

You might be able to find a 1.3 "S" engine with transmission from an Ascona/Manta B, these cars are known as "1.3 J" and have the newer OHC engine mounted north/south with a 4 speed transmission. That would make for a realtively easy transplant aside from the already mentioned distributor issue

So what you are saying is that the 1.3 engine would mate to the ascona transmission...
would the ascona trany be a straight fit into the Kadett B 1.1L

I do not know too much about that engine/tranny combo other than I had a brief encounter with it since a friend of my brother had an Ascona B with it, that was either an 80 or 81 as it had the plastic bumpers and I believe those were the only model years with that particular engine, up that point they used the 1.2 pushrod engine

I know it had the 1.3 OHC engine as I helped him change the head gasket but I can't remember if it had the distributor at the rear, I'm pretty sure it had the same semi-long gear lever as all the other Ascona B's so my guess is that it used the same gearbox but with a special bellhousing as that would make the most sence from a financial POV for Opel

My guess is that if you find that special bellhousing somewhere you would be able to hook up any "small block" OHC engine from the Corsa/Kadett range with an Ascona transmission but obviously it would be easiest if you found a complete unit from an Ascona B with the correct engine mounts and all, easier to modify something than start from scratch

I don't think it's the exact same engine as the Corsa GT but I could be wrong, power output was rated at 75 hp, the Ascona B model you're looking for is known as the "1.3 J" and as you can guess it's not a particularly popular engine choice for such a large car so you can probably get it fairly cheap

I don't know if the standard Ascona gear box will fit the tunnel of a Kadett B but we've been able to fit it in a Kadett C with the small tunnel, the exhaust was a tight fit though and we had to use a big hammer to modify the tunnel a wee bit

Just rememeber it's been about 15 years since I worked on that car so don't run out and buy different engines and such based on my say so, that's why I'm suggesting that you buy a complete engine/tranny combo from one of these cars rather than mixing and matching

You may have a engine mounting problem but with a drill everything will be ok
The trans can be used also from Kadett/C Ascona Manta/B 1.2 with the shift gears either in front or rear
