Toronto Summer Opelfest and BBQ 2009

    Hey Everyone,
I realise we are all in the middle of the annual "git 'er done for Carlisle" panic, but I thought I'd get word of this out before we gather so those of you with questions can see me at Carlisle...

So this year the 5th Annual Summer Opelfest and Barbeque will be on Saturday 27th June 2009.

As usual I will supply the food and a selection of non-alcoholic beverages…and those of you who have been here before already know where the beer fridge is….!!
Local hotel is available, so plan on making a weekend out of it.

    Rgds, Rob.

    I'll Be There

Looking forward to it Rob. I planned on asking you about it at Carlisle. I was hoping it would be that date since I also have something going on in Erie that Sunday evening. So I'll be able to drive right to that before heading back to Pittsburgh.

    Rob,

Sometimes timing is perfect. I am actually at a conference in Toronto on that Friday and would be really psyched to visit, meet the gang and see all your goodies.

Now I feel like driving up instead of flying and renting a car. Wonder how my boss would feel about me taking the 35-year-old Manta up. (With a 54 cents a mile personal vehicle allowance @28mpg I'd make a killing.)

I believe the law requiring passports in/out of Canada takes effect in early June.

Some states, like MI and maybe NY, can issue you a special drivers license that will take the place of a passport in/out Canada, for an extra fee of course .

    Yes.

As of June 1, 2009, everyone from every country that comes to Canada by air, land and sea needs a passport or equivalent travel document.

as is pointed out in the link, you don't actually need a passport if you are an American entering Canada. HOWEVER, the American Gov't, in all it's eternal paranoia, DOES require a passport when coming back in the the U.S.A. So unless you are planning on staying, you need a passport to return to your home country. Based on local gossip, that alone has the potential to reduce tourist traffic by Americans to Canada by up to 25%, as the percentage of Americans who actually have a current passport is very low, half or less of the Canadian count.

    Rob,
I changed my return ticket, so I will be back home on Friday. I will be at your place on Saturday for the BBQ Fest (little jet-lagged though).
I wonder how many friends from the south of border will be able to participate due to new passport regulations...

According to a newspaper article yesterday, only 27% of Americans have a passport, compared to over 50% of Canadians. But the US Customs folks have stated that they are being lenient on the planned passport requirements for the rest of the summer, using it as a "warning" but still allowing passage so long as other valid ID is presented.

    Maybe

    Rob:

We are a maybe. We have our passports so that is no problem. It is more a matter of time constraints. Right now it is on the calendar and we are hoping to make it.

We are headed out for vacation late next week. We shall see on return from vacation whether we can pull everything together and get there.

    Rob,

    I'm planning to be there.

I read somewhere else on this forum that Frank and Belinda of Magna fame may be coming!

    Hi Rob,

I'm going to be in town for a conference Friday and we're taking in the ballgame Friday night and staying downtown.

Have to catch a flight out of Pearson at 5:45 Saturday and have a rental so I'm able to come out for a few hours and see your groovy scene.

Can you email or PM me your address so I can figure out how to get there?

    Really looking forward to it.

Rob, I realize it's a PITA, but there's a slight possibility that my wife and I might make the trip - possibly in a new toy - but I can't confirm anything until it's closer. Can you handle a few last minute stragglers?
