fog-like mist on inside windshield

This really my first real post and am not sure if this is the right place to post it, but hopefully someone can help me out:

Lately there has been a mist like substance on the inside of all the windows. I pulled the heater core and fixed the seals on it and that worked for about two weeks and than it came back. I pulled the heater core out again and the seals are still in good shape. but I have no idea what is causing this mist. It getting annoying to clean the windows every other day and it is very dangerous to drive at night. I have no idea what this fog like substance is, and unsure what is causing it. Any body have any ideas?

Did you pressure test the heater core? It isn't uncommon for the core to develop pin hole leaks from internal corrosion. If so, you can either buy a used one, or I believe that most radiator shops have core blanks that would allow them to rebuild the heater core.

Another possible source of a mist or film on the inside of windows is from broken or cracked fuel vent lines behind the tire shelf. I would think that you would smell it too.

Questions that need to be addressed: Does this happen after the car warms up? Are you losing coolant, having to add to radiator? Is the carpet damp on the floor of the passenger side? If the answer is Yes, then you have heater core problem. If the core is stopped up it can cause undue pressure and cause it to leak. Have you tried to flush and back-flush the heater core? That should get you pointed in the right direction.

Have you been using ArmorAll or another plastic/rubber reconditioner? I've noticed a similar film on the inside glass in my cars after using those types of products on warm days, or if I just use way too much

It seems to evaporate up onto the glass and you can get rid of it, but be prepared to use many clean paper/shop towels!

+1 on the Armor All comment... I rejuvenated my door panels and some other misc interior parts about 4 years ago with a lot of armor all when I had them removed from the car and I've had issues with a greasy film that builds up on the insides of the windows ever since. Meguires cleaner wax and a towl takes it off pretty well.

New vinyl can also off gas and cause a film to build up

I hade the same problem with my GT, the car after a bit of running would fog up the windshield and then would go away. After a few times, the windshield gets oily and you can barely see out unless you clean it.

The problem got cured by replacing the thermostat with a 160 degree unit. The car was running a bit hot and the heat was entering the cabin through the passenger side vent. If you take the center grill off and expose the wipper internal arms, you can stick your hand in there and actually touch the top of the heater assembly. On the inside of the car you will see that the top of the heater assembly is open to this area and any external heat can come in through there and up the dash to the windshield.

Of all of the GT's that I've fooled with or owned I had one that always had a greasy substance appear on all of the interior side of the glass. If you let it sit long enough it required several cleanings to get it all off. Some cars with new interiors supposedly do this and it's sometimes an indication of a heater core leak. The GT heater box actually has a drain going into the engine compartment so I would think it would help to prevent or at least lessen the problem if it were leaking.

I actually have a strong smell of fuel inside the car so I think that might be it. I'll have to take a look at it when I have more time.

It's one of the most common problems with the Opel Gt. It's an inexpensive thing to correct, but it takes some work in getting to the lines and replacing them. If they are the original lines, then they should have been replaced about 30 years ago and then replace a few more times after that if vinyl tubing is used again. They end up turning brown, cracked, missing, and brittle like so many things that are old. Check out this tread.

Alright, so I did some work over the weekend. the pressurized the vaccum hoses and and checked the fuel lines check the exhuast pipes and found some little holes. I did some quick spot welding. So that fixed the smell. the smell is no longer there, but the fog mist like substance is still there! any more ideas I can try?

I'm not sure you actually got to the lines behind the tire shelf that are usually the cause of the gas smell and fuel film on the windows.
