When I had the dash out of my GT, I went thru the heater box (new cables and seals, remove yard waste..) and had the heater core serviced. It was about $35 to have it cleaned, flushed, pressure checked, etc. I don't recall offhand if it needed any repair, but I seem to think it did. Might have been recored. Any decent radiator shop can do all that. If it's out, spend the time/money, because once it's back in you will not like taking it back out for repair.
"No, it's not fiberglass."
"No, the motor is not in the back."
"No, your friend in high school did not 'peg' his speedometer."
I just took my heating a/c unit out myself (tilted to the side and watched the dust come out...) i know one of the issues is finding a heater core that small.
has anyone thought of utilizing the heater cores for water cooling pc's?
this one has a height of 120mm and a width about about 260-270mm and 1/2" fittings.
Double Heater Core with Fittings - Danger Den
you can also get them at a height of 80mm. and maybe use quieter PC fans to push the air around.
If all else fails, you can have a good radiator shop recore you old heater core. I recently had my '63 Ford Thunderbird radiator recored and it ran about $300 for a very large radiator
that was in real bad shape corrosion wise.
They unsolder everything and repair any leaks in the end tank/manifolds and install a new core. They can probably give you an estimate to rebuild yours. Just a thought.

Everyone is assuming yours is bad. Is it? I have a few spares for sale. My experience has been that if they aren't leaking, all they need is flushing out. Usually disconnecting both heater hoses and running low pressure(OE radiator cap pressure relief is ~13 PSI) water from a water hose alternating the flow between the inlet and outlet will do wonders.
