New Oil pump--Help

Hi guys.
I just got kicked in the stomach.The guy that is rebuilding my engine (72 Opel GT)just called and told me that the oil pump is no good.He will not put it back in because it will ruin the engine.
Dennis, at OGTS was very nice and will send me a used set to check out.There are no new pumps available
In the meantime......

My kingdom for an oil pump

Any help would be appreciated

Hello,

first you must look what for Oelpump you have there diffrent,Pump with Valve in the lower Cover ore without.
Than look on yout Timinghouse near the Pump,when here stand 0,2 its by Opel mounted bigger pump parts,they done it when the Pumphouse was diffrent by building.
Sorry for my bad English.

Can you be more specific on why the pump is no good?

The mechanic is telling me that the distance between the "teeth" is .01 when it should be .002). The teeth are worn out and he thing I will not get more than 2psi out of it
What do you think?

Michael is saying that some of the front covers were erroneously machined by Opel with the oil pump housing too large for standard pump gears. To compensate, they used 2mm larger gears in them and then stamped the front cover by the oil pump with 0.2 to tell that it contained oversized gears.

you must translate it.
Between the teeth is 0,1-0,2 mm,and from the Pumpwheels to the Cover is 0,1 mm,so it gives Pumps with Gasket mountet on the Cover and without,check it before put cover on.

Per 73 service manual ... oil pump backlash(gap) is .004-.008

If oil pump is worn out (car only had 95K miles) what doo you recommend I do

Hello,

make Pic´s of the Pump,
i drive Opel CIh Engines since 19 Years,an had never defekted Oelpumps Gears,
only one defekt Coverplate,with Oelpressurevalve,it is Plasticvalve.
Be shure your Bearings of Crank and Camshaft are OK,and i think your Oelpressure will be OK too.

The entire engine is being rebuild with new parts...pistons,rings,bearings,cam,etc,etc.

Is the oil pump that got me sick with worry

I'm with Michael in thinking your oil pressure will be fine. If there are no gouges from trash getting in the pump the clearances are probably okay. If the pump cover shows wear I place a piece of fine grit sand paper on a flat surface and work the pump cover in a circular fashion until most if not all of the marks are gone. The relief valve and spring were also mentioned. I've seen them worn to the point that they won't seal and have worn the sealing surface to the point a new part (plastic plunger) won't fix the problem either.

Although you have to go to the trouble of assembling the entire engine before checking you can check if the pump is producing pressure before you start the engine. When you spin the pump with a priming rod it will give you a good indication of what kind of pressure you will be getting with the engine actually running. If after doing the test you find that the pressure in not satisfactory you can still replace/rebuild the pump with no harm done.

So, I looked at the gears (pics did not come out good) and there are pretty big score markes on the gears and also on the sides of the cavity.Looks like the PO did not change the oil for ?????

So, I looked at the gears (pics did not come out good) and there are pretty big score markes on the gears and also on the sides of the cavity.

The cavity sides and the ends of the gear teeth always look scored and squared off.

There's a picture in this post of my gears which I put back in the car after I smoothed the teeth faces.

My oil pressure is fine.
