I don't know much about the 5 speed, but the starter is on the drivers side on the 1.9. I'm confusedWhy is this the wrong transmission?
OK;
On Craigslist is this:
OPEL GT ENGINE
Fresh rebuilt 2.0 16V motor for sale, but, it gets better. I talked to the seller, and even though they have a 5-spd for the motor, they don't have the CORRECT 5-spd which needs the starter hole on the passenger side, but, nonetheless, they have a getrag 5-spd for the CIH motors for sale too. ALSO, they have a straight, rust free GT body and at least the front end has been rebuilt, for sale too This is a NM car, so no rust. The owner is a serviceman, and is currently overseas. The seller is a friend and is going to handle the sale(s) His name is Anthony, and even though he has posted his phone number, he asks that you PLEASE just e-mail him, as it's easier for him to do it that way. I have attached pictures of the trans, and the body. He wants to sell the body as one "unit" (along with boxes of parts), the 5-spd as one unit, and the 2.0 16V motor as one unit (and it's related parts) So, he's welcome to any combo, or the whole lot.
This hurts as this is the motor "I" want, as I have the correct trans to go with it, but, I don't have the $$$ right now.
His e-mail is drift240@q.com

Jeff;
The trans he has is the normal 240 getrag you can get from Gil for the CIH motors, like the 1.9. the trans for the 2.0 16V DOHC motor is the same, but, the starter hump is on the passenger side, where the 2.0 16V motor's is. He needs this trans:
Getrag 240 OHC / DOHC Getriebe Opel Manta Ascona Kadett - eBay (item 190345513768 end time Nov-08-09 12:42:43 PST)
The link above is to the correct trans for the 2.0 16V, as the 2.0 16V starts out as FWD motor, and switching it to a RWD motor requires the trans from the 1.8 motor of the same "family" If you compare the two trans you'll see the starter hump.

Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly and for the same reason.
That trans looks alot like the one I got with the crate motor. From a mid eighties Omega.........

If someone decides to buy the 16V, I just happen to have the correct Gearbox to fit it...and it is available for a not unreasonable price...
One of the ways to tell the two transmissions apart if you are looking at ebay pics etc: the CIH version is 'symmetrical' with the 2 top bolts in relation to the ceterline. The 16V (originally OHC) version has a distinct offsett. Check the pics in this thread to see what I'm trying to explain...

I see what he's asking for the engine. Did he say what he wants for the tranny?
No need to drool boys, I have four engines inside a container arriving in two weeks. It looks like this engine in the little rods I'm building are going to be very mean.
$1200 for the engine is a good price and another $400 for the transmission should fit the bill. I might just give the guy a call tomorrow and see what can be worked out.

UPDATE:
The motor and trans have been sold.
"Yes, I do have a rifle rack in my Sportwagon"
Very nice!! I knew someone would snap that up! If the trans is the same one I had, it wont work in a GT....even highly modified, you would still need to cut into the tunnel and move the emergency brake lever. I guess if you didnt mind doing that,it would work....but still, that trans and flywheel is easily twice the weight ,probly closer if not 3 x!!!Kinda makes it a moot point. I am not familiar with the fitment on any other model however. It "might"work??? I just didnt think it was worth the effort for my application.

Gary,
I dont remember what markings were on that thing..... and I dont have it here with me so its tough to say. But, from what I do remember,according to my research, it was a GM Getrag knock-off 265. I'll have to take a lil trip and look at it again. I would think that the market for such a thing here in the U.S. would be next to nothing considering the # of bitters here. But hey....if anyone might need one(assuming thats what it is...) They could have it (cheap/trade) I really have no use for it. I will have to go look at it again to confirm.
Thanks for the info!
Joe

I remember your dilemna, you had either the Opel R25 or the R28, and not the Getrag 265. IIRC you got the engine/tranny from a guy in Colorado....
A Getrag 265 can be made to fit a GT, but it certainly is a snug fit. I have one for my father's GT.
