Potential items available from ARP specifically for Opel CIH engines:
    *1.5/1.6/1.7/1.9/2.0/2.2 rod bolts (the same)
*2.4 rod bolts (shorter than all the other CIH rod bolts)
*head bolts...studs are a bad idea because of access.
    *main studs
*Maybe rocker studs, but they would be very expensive due to the large number of machining operations required.

Should know by Friday of this week on the rod bolts however.

    Hi Bob,
Depending upon actual price I'm interested in:
2 sets of 2.0 rod bolts
2 sets of 2.4 rod bolts
    2 sets of head bolts
Thanks again for this super news/group buy!

I would think that getting prices on this stuff would be like hitting a moving target not knowing the amounts we are looking at ordering.

I am very intrested in rocker studs, Stan told me he broke a rocker stud once already and I am running the same valve train setup, I would as well be intrested in head bolts.

If they (ARP) can give you prices that are in the ball park that would be good enough for me.

Like I said a few posts up, I will gladly pay in advance....help keep that Visa from bleeding too much.

Nice work, Bob! I would be in for a set or two of anything made by ARP that fits the 1.9.
Stan was breaking rocker studs because of ridiculous spring pressure, according to Roger. Regardless, I would use new ARP rocker studs if they were available. It is all good, cheap insurance. You know, when you're sitting in lineup before the race, some of the things that go through your mind, like, are those old bolts out of a junk engine gonna hold up another fifteen minutes of 7500 rpm?
Please remove this thought from the list of pre-race mental jitters...
If one of the problems in making the rocker studs was all about the oil hole, I would be glad to have them without it.

Jeff, Remember this posting? I have drilled one of these ARP studs from Crane and they will work with a bit of modification ...

Bob, Great work! I think both ARP and your good self will be surprised how big the demand for these CIH fastners will turn out to be ....

Ah, yes, I do recall that you have been in that territory before. Thanks for the reminder. This is do-able.

Ironically this whole 'stocking Opel bolts' idea was his, not mine. I really just need to show there is sufficient demand to warrant production runs and catalog numbers of these bolts, and they will stock them. No cost to me after the first batch of rod bolts. In other words, I buy the first 400 bolts, they will make another 800 and put them on the shelf. I can supply him with a list of various companies, both here and abroad, who might have a desire to sell these items. That would be the clincher.

Fingers crossed, don't want to jinx it...

I'm sure I'll be needing some bolts of each type to add to my parts stash & my next engine build.

I know the springs in that motor where crazy, I also have a set of slightly softer springs he told me to try out. I already have the softer springs installed, but he had those hard ones for a reason, I would like to play with them, if the studs let me I am all over it.

Whats the saying in for a penny in for a pound.

That's the smart way to look at it, but I think the company that I work for operates on the opposite end of that philosophy, Penny-wise, pound-foolish.

Anyways, Head bolts and rocker studs are actually more important to me. I am not impressed with the products that are currently available.

The reason the springs were overly stiff is because the machinist in Texas who freshened up Roger Wilson's head decided that, like any Chevy(?!?), the springs that were in there before were too soft and they needed to be much stiffer!

Realistically, with the small stem valves that Stan's head had (if we are refering to the same head), no more than 250-260 lbs of open pressure is needed to run the rpms the engine is making power at. Now over-revving is another issue altogether, but IMO running an engine 1500 rpm past the power peak for the sake of revving is just abuse....

For what it's worth, a 1.8" valve with 8 mm stem, 1.25" springs, titanium retainers, and a .548" lift/272* @ .050" cam will hit valve float at 9500 rpms with 105 lbs seat pressure and 255 lbs of open pressure. If you're revving it less than these numbers, or have lighter valvetrain parts, then any more spring rate is just wasted energy, and prone to breaking/wearing out parts!

Thanks for the info. I wanted to have both sets of springs checked so I know what I have, just have not had the time. One of the things about buying someone elses stuff you don't know all the why's and what for's behind everything. Side marker plates go on tonight and Rad gets test fitted. One step closer.

Just a little update. It's all taking longer than expected, as many of the blueprints have long since been put away in storage! No too popular these Opels! The technician at ARP has found all but one head bolt blueprint, and the rocker stud blueprint. So hopefully this week we'll have hard numbers on everything.

Well, I just got off the phone with the rep from ARP. They're having trouble finding some of the drawings because they date back to 1994 or so. I will be sending him samples of most of these bolts instead, so there will be a little more time involved awaiting a reply on price.

Nope, the guy I've been talking to went on vacation. Should be back this week coming up.

I think I'm just going to send him some bolts to make new drawings from. I have one set of the ARP head bolts left over and another set of main studs, I think having them in their hands may expedite things.
