Isuzu rear Axles

Anyone know if the '84 Isuzu Impulse rear axles will fit in a '75 Ascona rear end?

The wagon came with a "spare" rear end. No axles or backing plates, just the housing and carrier. Trying to save time on a rear end swap by having axles with good bearings ready.

The spline is the same and the OD of the wheel bearing identical. I know the Isuzu axle is longer than the GT ones by a good inch or so - don't know how much wider an Ascona is compared to a GT though.....

I shall measure the length of an Impulse axle tomorrow as there is one out and on the workshop floor beside the Isuzu diff housing. The measurement from the end of the spline to the inner side of the bearing is the critical one.

The Manta/Ascona differential is wider than the GT.

The Isuzu Impulse diff is 1440mm or 56 3/4" wide from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. That should give some idea of the axle length compared to the Ascona.

I think that it is a 1/2 in bigger than a manta rear end. Opel Racer Stan C told me that. I do believe that the manta and ascona rear ends are the same.

wider is better... but you have to use 14 wheels.

My Manta/Ascona housing measures 50 1/2" from backing plate mount to backing plate mount. The GT measures 47 1/2" from the same points.

The non turbo one has 3.89 gears if you can find one

The Impulse rear end I have is the non-turbo one...

As you already have the Impulse diff you have two choices:
1) Install the whole Isuzu diff - it may be marginally wider than the Ascona one but they have been fitted to GTs which have even narower originals.

2) Since your Opel diff has no axles just remove the gear cover plate and slide an Impulse axle into the Opel diff and see how far the splined end sticks into the diff carrier. It may fit without even shortening the axle.

BTW: The diffs from 4-speed auto Isuzus have limited slip diffs here ....
but apparently not over there.

Also the complete Isuzu 3.9:1 gear set and carrier will fit into the Opel housing.
