Gas Cap Key Question

I did a bit of digging on the key issue. I have to admit I had it wrong. I was checking lock cylinders and keys. There is one key style for the doors that will not fit the gas cap. However if this original style has been recut to the other blank style then you can do it. Like Baz showed in the picture they are not all the same. It depends on the blank style used, or that you can get your hands on.

OK, I will need to get new keys for my gas cap. The guy I bought the cap from never tried the keys out, but IS willing to reimbure me for the cost of getting it to a locksmith who can make a key.

Any suggestions for who can do that here in Atlanta? Thanks

It looks like a code is on the bottom of the gas cap. I am not sure, but hoping.

If it is then your set. There are locksmiths that can cut them from the number alone. I had one cut for Dean and they never saw the lock. Post the code and I'll ask, I'm going by there today anyway.

Okay I am in the same boat with my gas cap. I have a '73 GT. with a locking gas cap in the unlocked position with no keys. My ignition key will not go inti the cap at all. But I am interested in this key code thing. Where on the cap should this number be? How many digits etc, what does it look like? Thanks Maybe I can take the code to the lock smith? Thanks

paulie an older model vw key blank will fit the gt gas cap ,
hope this helps ..

OP19 fits pretty much everything
079JB fits it all but has the gas cap look
076R or OP11 fit some models

There are also some 079 JE and 079 JC blanks for Opels.

I stopped by the locksmith that had blanks today.

OK, here is the info on the cap I have. On the bottom of the cap, the number 3435134 is sitting on the very bottom of the cap.

There is a sticker on top of the cap that is BB050.

On the keys that came with, but do not turn the cap are two sets of numbers...one is 105, which I am thinking is the key type. The other number is BB522.

So, can anyone make heads or tails of these so that I can have workable gas cap? I will be calling some locksmiths today but am hoping my "Opel Buddies" will help shed some light. Thanks

Paulie, my gas cap has the same two numbers. The 105 and the 3435134. I do not have the other numbers with the BB. I have no keys for my cap. So I think I may be trapped for a while. We only have one locksmith in town and he is the guy who wanted to charge me $40.00 for the job. I will just wait and see what happens.

the BB #s are key codes. Good locksmiths can cut keys from that info.

OK, I think that I will have an option for this, but if anyone knows a locksmith here in Atlanta that has either done this before, or has done work for someone here in Atlanta that is not a complete boob, that would be great. I will more than likely have to do it on the weekend, but we will get it done I am sure. The cap is in too good of shape to just send back. Thanks

The #105 key is the same code that is on my original 1971 Opel GT Ignition key. It wouldn't initially work in the gas cap, but it DID slide in perfectly. All I had to do was remove the tumbler cylinder and grind the tumblers to match the key (I placed the link to the instructions above in an earlier post).

But I have a few questions:

1) does either of the keys slide in?
2) if one or both does, if you hold the cap in your hand, does the key allow the centre cylinder to be rotated inside the cap?
3) Have you tried putting the cap on a gas tank filler neck and see if is initially locked or unlocked?

The key doesn't actually rotate the cap. It allows the inner cylinder to be rotated, to either the "locked" or "unlocked" position. When the cap is in the "locked" position, the outer part (the heavy, chromed piece) is effectively disconnected from the lower part that connects to the filler cap, so that it just can't be removed. When the cap is in the "unlocked" position, it actually "locks" the outer and lower portions together, so that rotating the outer part also rotates the lower part, allowing it to be removed from the filler tube.

If you already understand all this, my apologies for this unnecessary dissertation. But I think that the Opel GT factory locking cap is "unique" in the way it functions, and if you didn't have a cap that works before, you might not see how it is supposed to work. Hmm, "unique"; kind of like a lot of things in these Opels!

I did some more key digging. The 105 is an original key type number. I have an original for the orange car and even its replacement doesn't share the same number. The replacement types from Ilco, Taylor, Curtis and E.S.P. are all labeled 079JB and OP19. A factory gas cap key had the code stamped into it from what I'm seeing. I have 2 of them here and the type is the semi rounded top not the 105 style. If I were to make a guess you have a mismatch from the bb522 key you were given and the bb050 your cap seems to need.

I've been struggling with a gas cap rekey for a while now. I also had some keys cut from codes a bit ago and purchased almost all the stock of blanks from the local locksmith so I had spares to last me a while so right now I have some 40 odd Opel keys in front of me to dig through for information.

Paulie I can get you a BB050 cut here for 18 bucks.

i ask because both my door and gas cap keys are 105's but both are completely different in profile

Yeah, both of my keys slide into the lock, just does not turn it. Talk about annoying!!

I paid $100 for a cap on ebay in "excellent condition" (right!) that was in the "unlocked" that just needed a key cut, supposedly. The cap showed up in the "locked" position so it just turned and turned. I took it to a locksmith and they cut a key that fits and the lock just still spins and spins. I guess now I will try and find a cap in rough shape and try to switch out the locks themselves.
