The whole cradle has to come out to do a correct job.
I had a 72 opel gt given to me as a graduation/birthday gift. It needs a little work done to it. I have all of the work done to it except, I need to know how to remove the front shock mount so I can replace it with a good one. Does anyone know how to do this?

"Yes, I do have a rifle rack in my Sportwagon"
ur in the same boat i am, i just got a new front crossmember, and really not looking forward to doing it, but i know that it has to be done.
I assume by this you mean the upper shock mount is rusted, it's a very common affliction for GT's.Originally Posted by weatherman
Opel GT Source has replacement upper shock mounts (weld-in) for the GT, they can be installed with the cradle still in the car, but obviously the shock needs to be removed first.

I have contacted opel gt source the shock tower mounts are disc. due to the fact that the company that made them went under. They are in search of another company. I have a parts car that has everything in it good, but I don't want to replace the entire front suspension. I am just wondering if I can just weld a washer or something similar in there for a temporary thing until they can find something?
Hmmm, I guess that would be me! I used to sell them to Gil, but when I closed my shop I thought he had copied them locally and had them available again.Originally Posted by weatherman
Well, if you end up needing them, I still have a few left over from my C & R days. I don't recall the price offhand, but I can find out.
Bob
Can you get me a price? I am interested if it is reasonable. If I am not mistaken opel gt source wanted $17.50. Let me know, then we can get in touch with the payment and shipping info.
Thanks alot
Rally bob my email address that I forgot to give you is college_boy87"at" hotmail.com

I had to go wayyy back to find the invoices, but I used to sell the upper shock mounts for $36 a pair. If I split up a set that's $18 per piece, but seeing as I'm not selling Opel parts for a living anymore, I guess $15 is okay. As long as I don't sell it for less than it cost me!
But just for laughs, you should check the other side to see if it's getting close to rusting through, seldom does one side go bad without the other being close behind!
Bob
I fabricated mine from 2" O.D. Exhaust pipe, structural 1" washer to close the bottom, and two shock washers on the top and bottom of the structural washer to form the seats for the shock mount rubber donuts. You just have to find a way to fold the top of the tube over if you want to match the old style exactly. I did it with a jig in a vice, crude, but it worked great. I guess this is for the next guy, after Bob runs out of old stock.![]()

I will buy both, better safe than sorry. Let me know when you want to ship it. Will you do COD or do you want to have the payment sent to you and then ship them? Let me know I really need them. I can't wait to drive the "beast".
