Thump from right rear when going over bumps

Just like the title, every time I go over a bump at speed (speed limit) it sounds like a 2x4 is hitting the right rear, I suspect it is the spring, is there supposed to be a shock there too??? I have no shocks on the rear of the car. It is a 72 1.9l GT 4speed. Please help.

Joe, there are supposed to be two shock absorbers in the rear, attached to the back side of the axle housing just behind the rear spring buckets. The tops attached through the two holes above the axle to the body and are accessible from inside, under the package shelf behind the seats. HTH.

Ok took a look at my 73 (the daily driver) and found the shocks. could the Thump in the 72 be the spring bottoming out?

Joe, check your torque tube rubber components, the torque tube support bushing, etc.

Here's are my educated guesses.

Worn Shock, i.e. no oil left in the shock
Broken Shock, i.e. bushing at mounting points of shock have become dislodged
Worn or missing spring damper(one on the upper and one on the lower end of spring)
Broken torque tube mount
Worn out Donut in torque tube.
