I passed a Mobil station in Canton, CT yesterday (the one just East of the NAPA store, Bob) and saw 93 at $4.66

I picked up my son at school in New Hampshire this week and saw 93 at $3.92...

Jim, I don't see how provoking a war will solve the oil situation. It just pisses off the rest of the world. We're supposed to be setting a good example. We don't want military powers thinking like that, so we go stop them when they try. Or try to stop them, I should say. Seems like it fails every time now because we won't use the force necessary to get the job done. I predict we will surrender in Iraq soon and let them work it out themselves. So all we accomplished was getting rid of Saddam. Wasn't worth it, huh?
Personally I'd rather we just "claim" Iraq and make it the most formidable military base in the world. And be ready to extend it into Iran. But it won't ever happen. The majority of those citizens don't want to live a peaceful, happy life. It's not how they were brought up, and who are we to change that?

    Iraq Iran???????

Those two countries on their own had not so much to do with this mess, anyway we could overthrow and occupy those countries and be right back where we are now with the corporations taking over the oil fields and shoving the oil pipe straight up our rears again!!!!!

No kidding. I wouldn't expect ANYTHING could bring the price back down. At this point I haven't heard of anyone being angry enough about the price to actually want to do something about it. How many people, really now, have cut their use in half since the price doubled? So, why would an oil company want to reduce the price even if their cost for crude went down?
The price of gas doesn't worry me. It is diesel fuel that gets the job done. The price of everything we need to survive will have to increase as drastically as the cost of the fuel to produce and ship it.

Looks like we'll start living like Europeans; driving smaller cars, getting better fuel mileage, improving and using public transportation. We'll be conserving our water better. No more free unlimited soft drink refills or giant portions at restaurants.

I can accept all of that. I just can't drink my beer warm.
    __________

Here's what I can't understand; shipping by truck for non-local deliveries. I've consulted for a lot of companies; analyzing their operations. They continually ship by truck both inter-region and intra-region, often across the United States. The costs can be competitive with rail. Intuitively, rail costs should be much lower than the cost of small-lot trucking.

I've found two driving forces that allow trucking to be competitive with rail, and need to be changed:
Unions - train crews are allowed only 120 miles of travel per shift before they must be fed and housed. This is not federal law, it's union driven.

Poor Planning / Scheduling - We call this Just-In-Time scheduling. Heaven forbid a company allow enough lead time for parts and materials like they used to. And stockpiling raw materials is just not cool according to today's bean-counters. Because parts and materials on hand means capital is tied up that could otherwise be used to generate interest income. Make the supplier stockpile it for you, right? Wrong; it comes off the production line (JIT) and straight to truck.

The best thing I've seen in the last 20 years for efficient transportation (read this as reduced fuel cost) is the development of intermodal container facilities that allow shipping containers at ports to be loaded directly from ship to double-stack railcars.

The worst example of wasted transportation costs (and fuel waste) was General Motors' "Airbridge" where Boeing 747s were adapted to carry 56 Cadillac Allantes from Detroit to Turin, Italy, then flown back again for final finish. That might explain why the Allante was so over-priced.

Anyway, the point is, we need to change our ideas on transportation and labor, and as a system work on fuel savings. Because every aspect of manufacturing and business is impacted by the cost of raw oil.

RON98 was 1.62 euro per liter on the highway this week-end,
ate 60 liters for towing & only 20 liters on the track,
maybe I should rent 2 horses for towing...

I paid $4.17 for Valero 87 to fill up my Dakota yesterday in Placerville, CA. 'Twas my first $75 tank of gas. The Shell station down the street was $4.25.

I think the speculators are now driving the ship. It looks like excess money is going into commodities, metals, grain, oil, etc. We are probably in for a bubble bust in this market like the dot com and telecom bubbles of 1999 and the current housing bubble.

Or start racing horses! Not a bad idea! Hey, my wife has a couple of 'em. I wonder how many laps I could get out of a set of shoes and a bale of hay?

edit: Disclaimer- Just kidding. Don't need hate mail from the animal rights activists. I actually like horses. Just have a little problem with the expense of a certain pair of them from time to time. Stock car racing is a LOT cheaper!

I love working with horses too, but the only problem is you can put your race car away and it won't cost you anything. Putting a horse away still costs $$$.

Yes, I'm watching it. Watching the gas station attendant running out of 4's. Watching air fares triple. Watching an increase of gas theft. Watching an increase in food prices at the grocery store. Watching the report of an angry woman setting fires at gas stations and while she's at it a Starbucks too. Last week was the first time I've ever bought gas for over $4/ga. I think that now might end up being the good old days soon.

I just filled up with high Octane the other day for US$5.60/USGal here on the west coast of Canada.....and that was in a Sunday driver car of mine that gets 11mpg.

I expect gas prices to remain very high until the bulk of the civilian fleet has switched to electric cars over the coming 10 to 15 years. The bulk of the cars on the road are less than 15 years old. It's a simple case of supply and demand and as the average person builds up a burning hatred for the oil compnaies, they will switch their vehicles to non-gas burning cars.

Cars such as the Chevy Volt will meet the needs of the bulk of the average driver and I'm sure Honda and Toyota are busy developing their own electric cars.

One day the only cars burning fossil based fuels will be vintagre cars at car shows.

I was going to complain but I guess I have nothing to complain about.

We have a station on either side of the garage,

Gulf $3.91 (cheap stuff) $4.81 for diesel
    Xtra-mart $3.89 (cash) $4.83 for diesel.

I'll complain anyway filled the car carrier this morning @ $4.89 per.....lets just say it wasn't pretty.

Crude Oil Jumps $11 a barrel in one day

With gas prices already high at $4.19 a gallon, I went on a brief trip from California to Arizona. The gas in Arizona is still more reasonably priced at $3.69 a gallon. I was away for 9 days and to my surprise when I returned home gas was $4.41 a gallon for regular!

Today news says that crude oil has jumped $11 a barrel in one day! I'm certain we will be paying $5.00 a gallon by the time summer is in full swing. With all the election whoopla going on why don't any of the candidates address this scandal for what it really is... another form of terrorism from oil companies! America has relied too long on foreign fuel and now we're at their mercy!

My roomate has a Dodge Dakota V8 that gets about 15-20 miles per gallon. I told him my car should get around 30-34 miles per gallon, one more reason why I need to get my car up and running soon!

    Gas Receipt

Here's something funny I forgot to mention. As I was detailing the interior of my newly bought GT a few weeks back, I found a credit card receipt for gas from one of the previous owners in the mid 1990's. The gas was purchased at a Chevron Station in the San Francisco area for $1.29 a gallon!

Fuel costs have quadrupled in just over a decade, has the average income?

If I go out anywhere, and drive for say 45 minutes or an hour.. $20 gone. Me and my girlfriend went to see a movie a couple nights ago. Her house is about 15 minutes from mine, and the theater is like 10 minutes from her house. This is the first time I think I've paid more for gas to get there, then the actual movie cost. It cost me just under $20 for gas that evening, and the tickets were only $6 a piece.

Pretty soon here the truck is getting sold and I'm getting something with 25 MPG+. I don't think the gas gauge has seen over 1/2 in about 6 months, and 1/4 in the last 3 LOL.
