    sterio whines

yesterday evening, my manta begins to make a funny noise, only lasted a few seconds so i blamed it on the transmission, like i always do .....but later on last night coming home, it came, and did not go away. shut the sterio off to hear it better, and to my surprise, my speakers were whining, with the sterio OFF!!! its a 200W pioneer deck less than a year old, 500 watt jensen amp with 2 10" jensen subs and some nice little jensens in the rear deck. the whine was in tune with RPM of the engine, and i ended up unplugging my sterio from the fuse block to get the noise to stop. the origional AM radio did this in my GT, and heard that sometimes the condensor on the dizzy can do this? i have the pertronix unit so i can pretty much rule that scenario out, but what would make it start this?

A few years ago my Suburban suddenly did that. It started as a little whine whose pitch went up with RPM. It is a diesel engine, so rule out ignition...
Within a week the whine was so annoying you could not use the stereo. I thought the stereo was going T's up. I hotwired the blue wire signalling the amp to come on, left the player off, and the noise was there. So it was the amp, not the player, right? Well guess what. Next week the car didn't want to start, this is the dual battery system, by jumping it off my pickup it started but the volt gauge wouldn't come up to 13 after starting. Batteries would trickle charge overnight and the car would start okay, but the volt gauge would keep dropping as you drove with lights, heater, etc. on. My wife wasn't real happy, this was her "Mom-Mobile" and it has to take kids to and from school every day, etc...
What's this got to do with stereo whine?
The alternator on the Burb happened to be the same as the one on my big work truck, so I swapped 'em. The stereo quit whining and the voltage stayed up, the car was fixed.
The alternator had failed, before going out completely it warned me by making the stereo whine. It only makes sense if you think about it! Ever notice your stereo has a funny buzz when you play it while a battery charger is hooked up to the battery? There is an "unclean" voltage going in, stereos don't like that!
Try disconnecting your alternator wires and see if your stereo quits whining. Then try it with the belt off but the wires on. I'd be interested to hear what you find.
This is my hunch, since it started happening after everything was just fine before and no changes were made.

If your power line to your amp is ran to close to your RCA cables that will happen. Also check you remote turn on see if it works.

that noise isn't as noticable as alternator whine, and it doesn't go with the RPM of the engine

when you say the stereo was off, do you mean actually turned off or just the volume at zero? because if it was actually turned off... then that is really weird, but my money is definately on alternator whine

Hey Smurf- are you sure that the whine isn't part of the music your listening to? They are putting some mighty stange things on some of your generations music these days.. Try putting on some Bethoven or Harry Connic Jr. and see if the whine is still there.

i'm going to check the alternator, i put the sterio in this spring and nothing has changed. i'll unplug the alternator and run it with no belt for future references. i turned they key on, car off and it doesnt whine, only when engine is running.

Right on greensmurf20 I guess you wouldn't want to hear about the concerts I've been to, but I digress, and we are moving way off topic. But needless to say they were good. Jarrell

lol, the trick is to try and get me to act my own age, let alone like i was born 30 years ago!!! i seriousely have the mentality of a 2 year old sometimes, i swear ......but i almost forgot one of my favorites, tom petty!

    to keep us on topic:
i had to run to town real fast earlier, and the sterio stopped making the noise before i got to do anything to it, so when it does it again, which i'm positive it will, then i'll go throught he process of elimination and see what truely is causing it.

Don't know what your weather has been like in the midwest, but on the East coast it has been extremely damp. If it is raining out there your problem might be associated with a bad ground that gets screwed up due to moisture. Keep this in mind the next time it happens.

first thing i would check, since it went away, is if the capacitor on the back of the alternator is just loose, or a bad connection

your only old if you say so vicki!!!

i'd rather be 30 years older right now, have my life sorted out, sail somewhat smoothe, and a little cash flow would be great, oh so great!!!

FWIW, I was a lot more 'sorted' ten years ago, and had more money as well! Now as I approach 40 with no set future in sight I'm recalling my late '20's to early '30's quite fondly!

Does it ever sort itself out? I must have missed a turn somewhere. Back to the car, I agree about the capacitor. Also, when you drive it again, look into a power line filter. That will kill the A/C in your powerline.
