Unanswered: Aahhh Twin Solex carb bowls leaking 1.1 liter

While restoring my 1.1 liter engine I noticed the PO had painted the carbs....

It appears that he had coated the carb bowls with jb weld to stop pitting leaks.

Well it did not work.

Questions:

I know the motor is a 1.1 . 1967 SI motor.

The carbs are solex.

*How many different types of carbs were there for this motor?

* Where do I find replacement bowls?

*How do I identify the carb so I can obtain the correct parts?

Sounds like you will need new carb bodies. i have seen them for sale on the forum before. Do not know if the holes can be filled by brazing or welding. perhaps someone here who is experienced in that can tell.

. . . did you mean an "11SR" engine? The dual carbs and manifold on the '67½ 11SR engines are unique to that half year as all later '69-'71 dual carb 11SR/RUS engines came with OECS carbs and manifolds, non-interchangeable with your '67½ 11SR . . .

. . . only way to compare "early" vs. "late OECS" dual carb 1.1 engines is . . . post "passenger-side" pics of carbs and manifold!

carbs repair

I have found a used set of carbs.

It appears to have the OECS smog hose fittings.

Can I just block of the ports and use the carb???

I don't know if you can plug the OECS ports to make later carbs work, but I do have an extra OECS manifold (complete, with solenoid) and all the tech info on the OECS setup.

I would make sure the carb body is really bad and not a leak that can be repaired with gaskets. I never could get my 69 GT carbs to tune and switched to the earlier 67 carbs that didn't use the OECS ports and solenoid.

. . . that would be a definite NO!! . . . you can make the early, pre-OECS carbs work on the later OECS manifold by blocking the OECS passages, but not the other way around. The later OECS carb idles are locked at the factory and depend on OECS manifold idle air and mixture adjustments for setting/adjusting engine idle . . . to wit:

So it would seem then, that if you have later OECS carbs then an OECS manifold is required to mount and operate them.

Oecs

Not only need the carbs and manifold to use these carbs but also the idle solenoid set up complete with a working 'computer'

Don't go there! Strong men go weak at the knees .... and lesser men have been known to break down in tears while trying to tune the OECS carbs.

One thing to try is finding an early single carb off a 1.1 or 1.1S motor which have the same Solex model number in the manuals - but different jets and accelerator pump shot size. Two might be able to be converted for dual use.
I have not ever done that - or even seen a 1.1 one carb unit!

The Solex type is: 35 PDSI-2 and they may be used on some other German manufacturers motors - try Mercedes.

OR use one of these - pic below.

New carbs

I like the weber carb and intake set up.

What are the part numbers.
How much will it cost?
Where do I get one?

I just want my vehicle to run without spewing gas......

. . . not as easy as that!! . . . strictly aftermarket combo with Weber, Dell'Orto and Solex sidedraft carbs used . . . can find those on e-bay now and again.

That said, Kevin Fier (kevinfier) has had a running SSD setup on his wagon for several years now, ask him to point you in the right direction . . . this is his:

1.1 Solex 35 PDSI-2 NON OCS carburetor Needed

My carb bowls have pitted and are now leaking.

Does anyone one have a set for sale?
Or a damaged set I can get the bowl from?

Just merged the above thread/post with your earlier "same subject" thread . . . BIG NO-NO! . . . clutters up site database and complicates future searches!

Help us out here . . . refrain from doing this, please!

BTW, float bowls are cast as part of carbs and cannot be separated from carb body . . .

Ken,

As Otto said, it is not that easy.
I found my carb/intake on German ebay, was not cheap, but worth it to me.
In addition to the carb/intake, you will need to fabricate throttle linkage, mine had the added difficulty of being an automatic, and needing the passing gear kickdown also.
You might be able to use the later carbs from a 1.1SR w/ automatic, they did not use the same OECS setup, and did not have the solenoid & computer.

. . . unfortunately, Kadett dual carb 1.1 with automatic was offered for only ONE year, Kev, and looks like wagon only option too!

Otto,
Your chart needs to be corrected. Vicki & Allen's 69 Kadett 1.1SR sedan also has an automatic.

Depends ...

Think it depends upon how that chart is read.
Looks to me like both the Model 31 Sedan and Model 39 Wagon came with the 11S motor standard and the 11SR motor as an option - either with a 4-speed or an auto as another option.
So is Vickie's 1969 Kadett a Model 31?

Uh, Kev, '69 is the only year listed in the chart for the twin-carb 1.1 A/T wagon only option . . . (*) . . . and that is according to all the available information in both German and US manuals that were available.

That said, and I can't recall exactly, but if yours is registered as a '68 here, the manufacturing date needs to be established and I'll bet it was September '68 or later, which would make it a '69 here in the US. Anyway, based on the best of my research available, the only 1.1 A/T cars ever produced were US-spec, 1969-year, 11SR, 4.11 geared, Model 39 Wagons . . . you couldn't option the "Wagon only" 1.1 A/T differently.

Yes, my Kadett is a '69.
My point was that there were Kadett models w/ the 1.1SR w/AT besides the wagon.
The Gages low mile '69 Kadett LS has that setup.

Hmmm . . . '69 FSM - Section A lists the "11SR A/T 4.11" option only for the Model 39 Wagon and possibly, though not clearly, for the Model 31 Sedan. The Model 95 LS Sport Coupe lists only the 4-spd 11S and 19S with either tranny as drivetrain options.

Then again, the FSM also lists the Model 93 Opel GT being available with both the 4-spd 11SR and the 19S with either tranny, when we all know the Model 93 was the 11SR engined GT and the Model 94 (not listed) was the 19S engined GT!

Anyway, changed the chart to reflect the 11SR A/T option available on the Model 31 . . . for now!

Got a bit more detailed info from Vickie regarding her pristine 1969 11SR A/T Model 92 Kadett LS and updated my drivetrain HTML to reflect it . . .

Back to the Subject!

klwinter - you couls see if you can find a VW Hot-up shop and ask if they have Weber 34 ICH or ICT single barrel carbs - or what ever they use to upgrade VW motors using single barrel carbs.

Have a look here to see what they are like - might even be able to by them there!
