Unanswered: Sony 5 1/4 inch in kick panel area
like everyone else i wanted to add some speakers up front , everyone seems to be using 3 -4 inch speaker and installing them in their vent hole or cutting a hole in the panel , my metal is in real good shape so i had no desire to cut a hole in the kick panel area or use the vent area . i wanted a good size speaker so i split the size and went with 5 1/4 inch speakers . i used Sony Xplod 4 way speakers # XS-R1342 160 watt peak power , rated power 35 watts . the speakers need a 1 3/4 depth mount so i used wood and lexan to make my speaker housing . i chose to mount the housing to the kick panel then install the speaker in the housing , i took in consideration the amount of leg room that i was willing to give up to both driver & passenger and the measurements was acceptable . so the speakers are in and im satisfied with the sound system in the GT , i do use a set of 6X9 4 way Pioneers in the back aswell . if anyone has any questions just drop me aline or post back here . here is some pics of the speakers. That is a drain area for the cowl and is prone to get wet. How did you seal them up? They make a rain proof baffle that can go behind speakers and actually improves the sound. Use the baffles to the inside of the car and route your wires the same way to keep from poking any holes in them .just an idea to keep your speakers from getting soaked when it rains. The baffles have square corners and have to be trimmed off to fit under the speaker grill but the sound change is worth it. Around 10 bucks a pair. Have fun
When I first came back to Colorado my first job was with Sunshine Audio installing car systems for a year at 6.50 a point. 4 points for a deck and 2 points for speakers. 1 for an antenna and 3 for an amp. About starved to death but I do know stereos. Last edited by nobody; 07-04-2007 at 12:30 AM. |

That's pretty innovative! I was thinking of front speakers in the kick vents too but am hesitant to block one of the primary ways of getting fresh air circulating in the car. This looks like an alternative to consider. Have you had any issues with the speakers sticking out and interfering with leg room?

I did something similar with sewer pipe. Still in the car, still working fine and not a major nuisance and removable in seconds. Last part of this thread.
