Unanswered: radio speaker

When i got my 72 gt, it had some rigged up explode speakers behind the seats. I removed them and just replaced the tray in the window. The new tray has an uncut speaker hole and id like to keep it looking nice. What kind of speaker originally came with the car? Its probably a long shot to find one but has anyone found a speaker that will mount to that speaker cover that mounts in the tray? As long as i dont have to cut out the hole i am fine.

If you are using anything like a modern stereo, you won't like the sound that comes from an original type speaker.
You can match up speakers (3" x 5"?) to the stock mounts. There are two other pieces besides the deck. There is a speaker plate (with felt isolation strips) and the speaker cover (plastic, but there are some metal louvered covers, too).

Check with Crutchfield for possible replacements. You'll need the dimensions for the actual hole and the studs.

Look for a decent 3way. If you run only one speaker it will at least have a fuller range.
