Unanswered: Radio Antenna

The look of having a 3 foot piece of wire sticking up out of the front of my car is a really big turn-down! Anyone have any idea's for relocating the antenna, or some way to hide it? ...Anything?

(I am updating my stereo to a new Pioneer, so maybe that will help with something)

One of my previous GT's had motorized antenna that would retract flush with fender when the radio was switched off.

here in europe fords have an electronic gizmo that fixes into the rear screen power line and then has an output for you arial wire to join to
try to find the same type of thing then you can fill the old antenna
hole for a smooth finnish

out of the top

Ive seen people put a fixed nonmovable antenna out of the top of the gt where the back window starts. it was set about 75 degrees pointing out. it looked good but if you really think about it, it looked like a large remote control car.

I replaced my antenna with a retractable one many years ago. It fit where the original does, but you have to use a plumbers strap to keep the mechanism in place. After years of non-use, I hooked up a battery and checked out my electrical system and by golly the antenna extended and retracted just like it was supposed to. BTW, I picked it up at a local auto parts store. HTH.

antenna

I know mid 70's Chevys have an antenna in the windshield. If you look close at it it looks like a VERY thin peice of wire running around the perimiter of the glass(only noticeable if you really look)

Maybee someone makes stick-on kits??

Worth looking into that,

Robert

I don't like the stock position. Worse yet, I don't like the RC car look. Opels don't get much respect due to size. Looking like a toy... well, you know what I mean.

The windshield ants. worked good but cost too much. They used to sell kits until GM ended production.

Some Japanese cars use(d) ants. in the trunk lid. My '84 Mitsibishi had one. I liked it but it hurt reception when you're far away from anywhere. Esp. if anywhere is toward the back of the car. Reception forward is better.

I bet you can find trunk lid ants. in junkyards. They hung on plastic clips, nothing fancy. There's plenty of room to hide one on a GT. Under the headliner would be best, if you're removing it.

Crutchfield used to sell powered ants. for the trunk. I don't know if they still do. I'm not talking retractable. I'm referring to boosted signal.

$50 buys a generic retractable ant. They don't last long in daily use, like 5-8 years. I've bought several, gave up, and use a solid ant. on the Nissan now ($5). No more scratching as the ant. goes up/down. No more busting ice off. No more $50.

radio shack

Radio shack was still selling the windshield antennas as recently as last summer, I bought one for my kit car there.

If you have no luck there, some Fords use an antenna mounted under the dash that works OK. It works even better mounted along the A pillar or the edge of the roof under the headliner. I'm not sure what cars used it, but I bought 10 of them NOS once surplus and still have a few. Drop me an e-mail if you're interested.

There is an antenna in the windshield of my 75 monza and it works pretty good both on am and fm. I'm a little leary of keeping the antenna on my GT in the stock location and may move it to the rear of the car on the driver's side. There is ample room for the motor mechanism and enough braces in the rear to mount it to. The only possible problem I can foresee is if I have to do any maintenance on it, it will have to be through the two tail lights. JMTCW.

i put a AM/FM pioneer CD player in the back of my GT in the spare tire compartment. i put the antenna in the passenger side rear quarter and smoothed over the origional antenna in the passenger side front fender. i get good reception, even on some stations that dont like to pick up very well on most sterios.

Well, I guess I'm one of those (maybe the only one) that has the "R/C GT" I have a German FUBA antenna on top of my GT, just forward of the back glass. I did this becuase, too many years of leaning over the passenger front fender, working on the motor, with the stock antenna poking me in the gut. I got tired of it and when I went to upgrade the stereo, I got the FUBA. It's also an amplified antenna.

mirror antenna

Awhile back I was looking for some Bullet-style or Talbot mirros for my GT. I ran across a Ebay item for some mirrors that had the antenna built into them. The company was called Fuba. These guys are still in business. However, I'm not sure that they still make these. I think these particular Fubas were NOS from the early 70's. Might try looking on German Ebay.

The Good Old Days:

When parts were made better, apparently. I put a power antenna and electric fan on my (sold) blue Opel GT in 1979 and both are working fine on Jan. 26, 2004.

Fuba link

Yup I was right. These boys were made way back in 1969!!!

This might be the answer to some of your problems IF you can still find some.

Talking

I have been thinking about this and have decided that eventually I am going to go with one of the satellite radios (XM, Sirius). Those antennas are very small and look more like a lump of coal. Another bonus is that they can be painted to match, and I also have heard stories about being molded into the body and still getting decent reception.

Let's just hope that those services are still around when I get to that part.

I just solved the antenna problem! $30 and it can be hidden any where and it is smaller than a deck of playing cards, it has 3M adhesive on it so you can stick it somewhere under the dash.
