J C Whitney has a bar/console that goes from side to side. I think it hooks into the trim around the window. I never measured as to whether it would fit, but, it has two or four speakers in it.

springs
I don't think I would like how that overhead speaker thingy looked with the factory rear console in the rear over the hatch springs.
On my Kadett wagon, I custom made speaker "pods" to go in the rear hatch. I made mine out of fiberglass, but I would imagine you could use all sorts of things. I pulled out the "pop-plugs" holding in the rear panel and installed my new panel with rubber blind nut rivits, so it's plenty solid and I can take it out later with no ill effects to the car. I also used a set of generic "Q-forms" from the local stereo shop to make custom kick panels for the front. No cutting to the car at all, and minimal intrusion into the people space. I don't know how that would work in a Manta, though, as they're a bit more crowded around the feet. The stereo shop also had some interesting replacement visors with speakers built into them that looked interesting. And one last option you may want to research is a single replacement speaker for the original with the capibility to play both the left and right signals fom a stereo at the same time. Secret audio used to make one that would work, and it seems to me it wasn't too expensive.
