    quick engine question 1.9

when I was cleaning out my storage unit I found a 1.9 engine

I was like where did this thing come from

the big thing is it has an aluminum oil pan so that tells me its not a GT engine

can anyone tell me what it came out of and if its a Hi comp or low comp motor

    thanks

    David

GT's did come with aluminum oil pans. Mine is a 1970 GT 1.9

All my '70-'73 Manta's and Ascona's came with cast aluminum pans (Bad for rallying!) I got a steel one off of a '68 Kadett and the '75 1900 has a steel pan. I'd guess very probably a low compression motor.

Can you get the engine number off the motor? Also, look in the vicinity of the starter motor, where you might find the date when the block was cast.

68-71 Kadetts have aluminum oil pans with dipstick in passenger side
    69-71 GT had aluminum pans
70-73 Mantas has aluminum pans, possibly most were finned

On the "tab" between the #2 and #3 cylinders is a code starting with 19S. See if there are stars near the 19S

A steel -68 Kadett oil pan ? Do you have a picture ? As far as I know, the only steel Kadett B pan is the ohv one.

All I can tell you is that I pulled it and a whole engine out of a you-pull-it junkyard in Columbus OH back in 1982. It was a Kadett B.... I might be off a year on the model. I remember I was surprised to see it being a steel pan as all I had ever seen to that time were the AL ones. Can't recall if it was a sedan or wagon. I THINK I've still got it somewhere .....

You are correct. Mantas were the only ones.

Does it have the two bolts through the head into the front cover ? If it has, then it is a -72 or newer engine and most probably a low-comp engine.
