    Exclamation1900 owners . . . especially Detroit area

Posted this to classicopels list, but worth repeating here:

Just received this from Keith Price, Marketing Director at AutoWeek and avid ITB
racer in '75 1900s back in early '80s, mostly at Waterford and other "local" tracks.
Lee's a long-time friend of Keith's and raced and prepped some of those Opels as
    well. Here's the poop:

    LEE'S PRECISION SVC
    21380 COOLIDGE HWY
    OAK PARK, MI
    (248)546-5989

Let's save some soon-to-be orphans up there guys! How about it?

Lee Johnston, the Opel guy up here, is losing the lease on his shop location of the
last 15 years or so. Several 1900's could get sent to the crusher (very soon!).
Call him at 248-546-5989...if you have specific needs. Urgency is key! kp

    Let's save them guys!

    Detroit update

I just got off the phone with Lee Johnston, nice man btw, he's REALLY in a bind and needs to move cars especially, just to touch on a few things:
74 or 75 1900 Sedan 4-spd decent enough to be put back on the road- $500
75 Sportwagon, rusty but complete, 4-spd. At time of conversation, he said he'd take $20 (that's two-zero) and even fill it with loose parts.
    74 Rallye, has damage, automatic
71-73 Manta ex-IMSA race car, has log book, but no motor or trans, but, still has cage, and body is in PRIMO condition, make offer.
The crusher starts eating them Monday AM. He says he'll be there when needed, so, if you're close enough to get there by any means, he's really letting things go. Let's see what we can do to help him out, come on, I bought a set of Ascona flares off him just now.

More Info on this Great Stash of Opel Parts

I, also, just talked to Lee. There is a great cash of Opel parts that someone needs to load up on a trailer and cart off. He is letting most of it go for free or for very little money. There are several things he has that I want, but he has no time to look for them, box them up and ship. Any serious or semi serious gear head needs to go get the IMSA Manta. There's a lot of great suspension stuff on it that is no longer available. Take that the car and you get the stuff for free.....

He'll be around the phone ALL weekend. He's willing to meet anyone at anytime. Although the thought of getting up a 2 AM doesn't thrill him.

I know there are several of you in the Michigan area. He is located just North of Detroit. Come on... some of you from Ohio, its not too far.

Don't let this stuff go to waste.

    Pete,

No he has no time to post pictures. The new building owner is hounding him to get the place cleaned out now. You should call him. The number is listed above. If you can't get there fast, try to find someone local that can.

    Detroit update

Anyone close, the Sportwagon alone is worth the trip, as it has ALL the F.I. pieces, the sprint manifold, and the big brakes. Jeez, I wish I was closer And he'll load up the car with loose parts!!!

I would take either the sportwagon or the 1900 in a heartbeat. But I live way too far west unless someone else would take custody for a while. Why do these things always show up on the wrong side of the country.

    The Plan

    1) Fly to Detroit
    2) Hire U-Haul Ten-Ton Truck
    3) Fill with Opel Parts
    4) Drive home

Opelers should be gathering like Locusts.

I remember how heart-breaking it was to dispose of 37 tonnes of Studebaker parts and still get people voicing regret at their inactivity at the time which lead to most of it being sold as scrap metal. One guy did two 400 mile round trips with a "Conestoga" Station Wagon and trailer and we filled it each time with new parts - shovelled off the floor with a square-mouthed shovel.
He sent me $50 a month for five months (to my surprise!) to pay for it all.

So get your acts together as Opel parts need saving. I'll have to leave it to you guys over there as driving the U-Haul back across the Pacific Ocean presents an insuperable problem........

    Detroit parts

I live 10 minutes away from Lee and I'll be meeting him at his place tomorrow. I don't have a lot of storage space but I'll try to save as many parts as I can.

They have got to be on crack!

I was just looking up U-Haul costs. From Detroit to SE Arizona, the *smallest* U-Haul truck is over 1600 USD! Much as I might like the Sportwagen and a bunch of parts, I can't justify 1800 USD (including airfare).

That said, I may be in that neck of the woods anyway the beginning of August, with my pickup and trailer. And I may have a friend a couple hours away who can pick it up and hold onto it until then. Still trying to put the pieces together, but maybe...

I spoke with a guy I know who lives about 30 miles North of there. He will attempt to call Lee and go by there Sunday afternoon. He drives a Saturn Ion, so he doesn't have much room to haul stuff for me. At the minimum I'm trying to get a Good Dash for a Manta and a set of Rally gauges. There's several other goodies he has I would really like, but he is saving them for whom ever buys/takes the IMSA Manta. If nobody ups for the IMSA, then I've got a shot. Whoever makes it over there with a truck and trailer, will be in OPEL HEAVEN!!!

If anyone does happen to decide to go there, please PM me. Lets Make a Deal!!! Better yet call my moble phone 479-739-2544.

damn why couldnt htis have happened in cali or some where closer i would have been there in a second, its to far to go and u-haul prices are too high. other wise that would be the way to do it, fly out there and drive back but even with my almost no coast plane ticket its way to much to rent the u-hauler. well hope someone can grab atleast most of these parts it would be worth it for someone to go pick them up thats near by then post them on this site for sale and let us buy them.

Lots of Opels, for a long time.

Can someone save me the IMSA Manta?

I can pick up when I get the Blue Max. The Blue Max should be driveable and I can trailer the IMSA car.

    Where was everybody today?

Gene, I don't know how you got the pictures 'cause I know you live too far away.

Otto, he's wondering if any of your Detroit area relatives are coming by.

Here's what I know. Lee found a place to keep the race car for now. The wagon has a 1 WEEK reprieve! Jeff Reeve ([email protected]) took it home but can only keep it for 1 WEEK! I saw it leave and it is indeed full of parts. $20.00!!!!! for all and it's fuel injected!!!!! Sorry, I'm a low tech guy - the Weber suits me fine.

There are still 2 Mantas (one with a fully intact fuel injection system, the other I didn't look under the hood), and a 1900 (Ascona) 2 door left. These cars are definitely not in pristine condition but have lots of usable parts. Lee says the Ascona can be put back on the road with minimal work and he's willing to sell it for $500 (including a load of parts)! Or they get crushed Mon.

MICHIGAN OPELERS - CAN ANYONE AT LEAST STORE THESE TEMPORARILY UNTIL SOMEONE WHO WANTS THEM CAN GET THEM? Who's got a big enough piece of property, etc? A shame to crush these cars!

Fellow Opelers, I can guarantee you've never seen so many Opel parts in one place. We're talking maybe 1500-2000 (or more) square feet crammed with parts! A guy at a local parts store put me in touch with Lee last year. He was very helpful with parts (unbelievably cheap) and advice. I had the car at Carlisle - the rallye bronze Manta. He has THOUSANDS (maybe tens of thousands) of Opel parts in his workshop. And he is able to identify even the smallest part or bolt on sight! He's even got a roll cage ($1000 value per Lee) for an Ascona that will be going to the scrapyard.

HE NEEDS HELP SORTING THROUGH THEM AND WILL LET THEM GO FOR NOTHING OR NEXT TO NOTHING! OR AT LEAST A SAFE PLACE TO KEEP THEM UNTIL THEY CAN BE SOLD OFF.

I took one tub of parts home today and will take what I can tomorrow. These will somehow be sold with proceeds going to Lee in months to come. But I have nowhere to keep the big stuff - cars, engines, transmissions, etc. or even much of the small stuff. There's another tub full of fuel injection parts - computers, etc. and even a complete(?) fuel injection wiring harness. Loads of engine parts, complete engines, transmissions, clutches, heater cores, driveshafts, etc.

Lee said he'll be there from about 10-2 tomorrow. His shop is on Coolidge just north of 8 Mile. It is hard to see because it's behind a building with a blue awning (Accuflow).

C'mon down, Monday everything will be gone!

This is one of the times that I wish I was still in Ohio and not
