Interesting developments at the ole Opel ranch

    Fire.

It started 10-15 miles north and west of me. It has traveled down the valley and is now south and west of me. The flames look to be 2-3 miles away. There's almost no wind and I can barely smell any smoke. In the morning, however, the wind will pick up.

Most of the fire has moved south, although there is still quite a bit burning to the west of me. It is also less intense and is producing less smoke. Even so, the sprinklers are running.

My son sent me a couple pictures of the smoke plume yesterday. It looks to be a big one.

Probably not. We just got flood insurance and there is a one-month waiting period before coverage starts.

    They think of everything.

Sorry for the thread hijack Mike.

I just got a life insurance policy that has a small loophole in it. If I bought into the $10,000, plan then I can, at any time, for any reason, increase it to $70,000 with no medical exam, no questions and no exclusions. So if I find out, say, tomorrow, that I have 2 weeks to live, I can increase it to $70K.
And I knew a guy that got his diagnosis and last breath within a 2 week period.

I could, literally, call from my deathbed and increase the policy.

I was actually thinking about insurance at about 2 AM last night, and how in olden times you'd have to wait until morning to call someone, maybe even go to their office and sign papers, to get insurance. Now you can get it via the Internet, so at 2 AM I could buy insurance. Of course, there's be that waiting period catch.

Meanwhile, the fire is a lot larger, 22,000 acres, just not much larger in my area. This morning I drove a stretch of HWY-16 to see what it looked like and very little of the fire came into Capay Valley. Most of it is burning on the other side of the first ridge although there were a hundred or so isolated smaller fires on this side, probably due to embers.

Last Summer the area East of me was on fire for almost a month.
Today i went for a MC ride through the area and was surprised at how much survived.
I didn't get to ride to the worst parts of where it burned because the roads there are still shut down but where I was you could see there was a LOT burned but a lot survived. In a lot of areas the only sign that the fire was even there was the tree trunks were all black and there wasn't hardly underbrush.

I know it's a small consolation now but in a couple years you might not even see much sign that there was a fire where it's burning.

I've seen areas like that. In some places the fire never gets to the crown of the trees and all the fire did was clear brush for you.

I took a nap earlier, Blitz-writing wore me out. When I got up I smelled smoke, when outside, and there is a lot of it. Visibility is about a mile. The sun is a dark red. I took a drive and saw my neighbors had hitched all three of their horse trailers to something. Heading west towards the fire area I was met by 20 or so fire vehicles headed in the opposite direction. I took that to be a good sign. All the roads leading west of 86B (a mile or so from me) are closed. I went as far as the casino again to see what I could see. There are definitely a lot more fire trucks here, and I saw three trucks trailering large bull dozers. I pulled off to talk to some news folks, because they know stuff, right? Not this time, other than to confirm the wind had changed and to agree with me that the online Cal Fire maps are nearly useless.

I am signed up with the Yolo alert system and still haven't received any messages from them.

I figure when it gets dark I'll be able to see more, strange as that sounds. In the mean time, I think I'll pack some clothes and hitch up the trailer. Thing probably aren't that bad, but the with lack of information...

Wind at 6000 feet is from the north at 5 knots.
At 3000 feet it's from due west at 15 knots.

    Hi ya Mikey,
Hot times in the old town tonight huh?
Best place for fire news is yubanet fire news.
An up to date map shows spotting around Capay.
If there's a smell like burnin' walnuts it's best to
get outta town. All righty. Seriously, if you be
needing anything give me a call.

The sky here was clear this morning but winds have shifted and it is smoky again. The fire appears to have made it to this side of the last ridge and is threatening farms and homes at the edge of the valley. Most of that fire looks small and scattered. I can see smoke rising through the trees but the trees do not appear to be burning. I don't see any flames.

The big planes are coming in now, dumping the red stuff. They really do get close to the ground, treetop level. They are dropping at the base of the ridge, I figure to contain the fire rather than put it out. Fighting what does come out of the hills, onto level ground, is probably easier than in the steep hills.

There's another big one circling now. I figure he/she is looking for their target. Dumping bright red retardant makes more sense now. You can see where the previous plane dropped and where you need to drop to continue the line.

I'll try to get a few photos of planes dropping the red goo. It's pretty cool.

Thanks for the calls and offers of support. I don't see having to actually evacuate, but like Don wrote above, if the smoke suddenly starts smelling like burnt walnuts, it's time to go.

The smoke has cleared and things seem almost normal here. Visibility to the hills west of here is limited, but that is to be expected since the fires are still burning. At this time 70,000 acres burned, 5% contained.

Winds here are light and from the southeast, which should keep the smoke a way yet not spread the fire much. Napa County doesn't need another one.

I was secretly hoping I could hero this and save the farm with an arm full of garden hoses. Actually, unless winds were high, that would have been doable. I have a wide area around the house that is nearly bare ground and there are only a few trees close to the house. I guess I'll have to hold off on heroing anything until the race at Buttonwillow.

Just received my copy a few days ago, but have been out of town ever since and haven't been able to start on it. How many sales so far?

I look forward to hearing your comments.

So far 12, plus the 12 I bought, and I need to get another 10 this week. I gave copies to friends and people who helped with the book. I'm going to send one to the producer of the upcoming remake of the Cannonball Run, and offer him the services of a little yellow Opel, currently racing in the 24 Hours of Lemons, that thinks it is a Corvette racing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

I need to make this available on Amazon, and figure out how to market it.

The wind has changed. It's getting smoky here again.

It's been smokey all day, but no other sign of the fire.

I went into town (Woodland (14 miles) and Davis (25 miles)) today for banking and grocery errands and the sky is mostly blue there. Most interesting was when I returned to the truck with my groceries and opened the door the smell of smoke was strong. I closed it, sniffed the local air, opened the door again, and it smelled like a camp fire.

Woke up, smelled smoke, went outside. Nothing I could see.

We've been having ash fall all week, orange sunsets and moon rises, too. Maybe that wasn't Mars I was looking at earlier tonight.

According to CalFire the closest fire is about 40 miles away, but it's big and has been burning for a while.

The map showing recent and all fares in California this year are impressive.
