Wasn't aware of that. So ........ After I strip it down, do I need to reapply?

I washed the outside of both of mine.

Time to touch up the black primer on Pozest.
Have to fix the MC leak on Blue.

It's a car day for me.

Buying a couple batteries (non Opel) and have to work on the Windstar, and get the Stang ready for the new top install.

    UGH!

I went to a Corvette car show today because I felt like being ridiculed and ignored.

I won the Best Engine award!

    Take that! 'Vette heads!

    IMG_0525.jpg

At the show was a super rare(only 79 imported to the States) new Lotus Evora:

    Way to go Gordo!!

I took my GT to the parts store to get a battery for the Stang.

I was chatting with the counterman and casually mentioned getting the core battery out of my Opel.

He lit up. "Is there an Opel outside?! Is THERE and OPEL outSIDE!??"

Yeah, you want to take a look?

"I'm going outside!!" he yelled to the other counterman in the back.

He was so excited, even though I don't have one of the "pretty" ones.

Then I showed him under the hood.

    "Damn! That's CLEAN!"

We chatted for a few while he told me he always wanted one since he was in high school in the late 80's. Hadn't seen one in a decade or more.

I've been to that store and talked to him a few times, while driving my GT.

But, seeing my Opel today really made his day. He couldn't stop smiling when I flipped my headlights.

I didn't win a trophy but it was still a good show.

Took the GT to a Cars&Coffee event today. Stopped at Micky D's for breakfast and had a couple of folks stop and talk to me about it. I usually show it with the lights half open, a few folks had to take a picture.

Now this is a real conundrum! After deriding the taste of "'Vette heads", they choose YOUR car to receive an award! From this, can I only assume that your car is in poor taste or ?? ... ....

Took the Tinyvette to a party on Friday. Interesting people, most artists, most packing up to leave for Burning Man this week. The car was well received.

The plan had been to also debut Catherine's GT, back on the road after 24 years. I discovered some safety items at the last minute that ruined those plans (no power brakes, steering lock would engage at random times).

Fixed all that today and the car is driveable again.

Next up for today, swap the Tinyvette's gas tank.

    Mike

P.S. We took the Tinyvette to a Vettes for Vets event once. After looking the car over they let us in, giving us a primo place to park. Nice people, not offended at having an Opel there. They got the joke and the appreciation of both Corvettes and Opels.

Anytime someone decides to take an Opel GT to a Vette gathering they should print out the article(s) about the designer of the Vette and the GT being the same dude.

They are cut from the same mental cloth and have a common thread (though I rarely admit the GM connection).

Without the Opel GT they may never have had their precious oversized Opels.

I believe the story is that the C3 Vette and the Opel Gt are decended from a design study for the Corvair from 1962.

Today I finished installing new master cylinder and brake booster and bleeding everything. Plus installed the Pertronix II electronic ingnition. Starts and runs great, but the brake pedal is squishy, so I guess I have more bleeding to do.

I recall crashing a corvette show a few years ago. Even though I got a lot of "poor man's vette" comments, some very nice "fiberglass Opels"
went home without an award, but this "poor man" did not leave empty handed.

Tons of work on my AC project today!

Repainted the rear tray, added a bit of sound deadner I had left and remounted the evaporator and blower.

Routed the new hoses through the passenger footwell and recovered everything with some new sound deadner. I also put the seat back in.
I then inspected the original ARA ac switches. The fan control is fine, but the thermostat needs replacement and is ordered now.

My alternator pulley had to be custom machined to fit. I took 5mm of of both sides of Keith’s pulley. Actually need to take 2mm more off of the backside, but I’ll run it for now. I think it is close enough. My Opel Omega alternator wasn’t quite compatible with Keith’s (which is perfect for oem alternators).

7 blade fan is installed, dryer and condenser are mounted. Hose are routed, but still need to be crimped and trimmed. I’m planning on making a shroud for my condenser since I mounted it so far forward to clear my bellypan cover mount. I may install a smaller 10” cooling fan on the condensor to replace my 13” that will no longer fit. Lots of work left to do, but I can almost see the faint glow of light at the end of the tunnel.

    Good job!

I'm shocked to see a lathe so close to a window. I would have broke that window three times by now.

It’s in my college’s machine shop. It’s been there for awhile! I don’t know how it hasn’t broken the window either. Maybe it’s bullet proof glass.

Over the weekend, I addressed the drive line issues -- replacing the pinion seal and rebuilding the center bearing support, including replacing the center bearing bracket, the donut and bearing, and the rubber bump stops and the torque tube mounts. In the process, cleaned and painted everything. Took it out for a test drive this morning and everything seems to work well. Sort of like the time the guy jumped off the tall building. They heard him at each floor as he went by: "So far, so good."*

    So far, so good.

I checked the fluid level in the transmission and differential--transmission was damn near empty and took almost a quart (last filled it back in 2000 before it was stored for 18 years); differential was fine. Glad I haven't driven it more than around the block a few times. I should have checked it earlier, and that explains why it wasn't leaking anymore.

On a better note, I finally got around to checking the headlight wiring and it had already been done by the PO back in the 1990s. I replaced the electrical tape, checked their operation, and closed them back up. I wasn't looking forward to that job anyways.

Saturday, I went to a little car show right up the street to hang out with a friend.
(so this is actually a "What I did with my Opel two days ago" entry.)
I came home with a "top 20" award, but I think there were only around 30 cars there.
Surprisingly, one of them was a McLaren MP4-12C.
A very impressive vehicle, which originally retailed for >$250K!

(Saturday) I participated in the annual Oil of Man Rally, with lots of friends and nice cars. To be part of the fun & game your car has to be +35 years old. Even it's not the best photos I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

    Cheers.
