    Rust Valley Restorers

    A recently new TV show hit Netflix out of Canada. It's interesting... and a little horrifying at the same time. I'm looking forward to seeing the female teenager develop her skills around a bunch of old farts, it's kinda rare to see females get into this industry.

    The 2nd episode has a very fast lesson in safety.

    I think this show proves there are redneck Canadians. I thought they only existed in America.

    I like Canadian car shows better. They don't seem to do fake drama like they do in the US.

    I like it because this area is where I grew up. I see the old haunts where I tried to burn rubber. They apprauched my nephew in that area who is a builder too. What I like is they show the financial realities of the trade.My brother knows his sister.

    Problem with this show is I feel the drama of the lack of money is part of the drama created for shows. I work at a high end hot rod shop and even in the low end of the spectrum, restoring a Lincoln Continental Convertible for 15K is utterly stupid to quote that little. Cheaper paint jobs would begin at 15K let along doing interior and mechanicals, and don’t even get me started on that top mechanism. As an owner of a 67 Convertible when I heard that price I turned to my wife and said it that wasn’t TV pricing I would tow my car to Canada.

    Something you might not be considering is location. Having a car restored in California is going to be way more expensive than having it restored at a place out in the country. While the price was tight, if you live in a relatively cheap location you don't need to charge as much for labor. $60/hr is what he charged for labor. I could be wrong, but I'm willing to bet your high end hot rod shop charges a hell of a lot more for labor, simply because it's located in California where everything costs a crap ton more.

    Where I live, $15k is not a cheap paint job for pretty much any vehicle. I could have my Navigator painted whatever color I wanted for that kind of cash, as long as I didn't require the interior to be pulled out. Old cars are far easier to strip.

    So, I agree that $15k was on the tight end and even the owner knew that. Ya, it might have been part of the show but I doubt it was seriously off. Moving forwards, he'll need to consider more for overhead. He could be looking at his shop as a sunk cost he wasn't aiming to recoup when he really should.

    The average skilled trade shop labor is around $100 per hour give or take due to the overhead. That’s why I don’t get too upset that I spent $1,600 in labor alone on my long block 2.0 conversion. I’d have easily gotten the job done for what most others do had I lived in an area where shop labor was much less. Likewise for most other things out here.

    $60/hr to $100/hr is a a 67% spike in price. But everything is crazy expensive in Cali. I haven't made any announcements about this on the forum yet, but I'm in the process of buying a house right now...

    If I was to buy this house in California, it would cost at least $100k more just because it's somewhere in Cali. The median household income vs the median home value there leads to a toxic cost of living. Everyone's overhead is higher.

    I agree with you on overhead costs but what does not change is the amount of hours it takes to paint a car such as a continental, our shop charges 95/hr and though it is more than 60/hr parts and materials are no cheaper based on location. Quality paint products don’t change price by area. PPG and Glasurit is just as expensive. Quality paint jobs will have 2-5K in materials on the car. That’s why I painted my Kadett myself haha 15K is extremely tight for that job if not impossible. ANYWHERE.

    How many hours of labor, on average, is a good paint job? Including priming and sanding the body? Let's say 100 hours of work, at least for easy math on this one. At $60/hr vs $95/hr, you're looking at $6k in labor or $9.5k in labor. So the location is going to be critical. It's definitely doable to have a really high quality paint job done for $15k where I live. In Cali? Not so much. You're looking at a difference of $3.5k for labor. That's going to make a dent.

    I disagree completely that you couldn't have a high quality paint job done for $15k. Just don't take your car to any shop in California, Hawaii, or New York City. Shops don't have a choice but to charge much higher labor rates in these areas. It's one of the reasons why foreign car manufacturers are building factories in the heart land instead of California. When labor is 60+% higher, that's going to kill you on restorations. That's where the bulk of the cash goes, to labor. $5k in parts and materials, $10k in labor at $60/hour billed, that's 166 hours of labor, or literally an entire month at 40 hours a week to complete a paint job. Unless you're dealing with rust, it shouldn't take 4 solid weeks of work to pull off a paint job if you're actually putting that many hours into painting the car.
