Last update for a month. This is as far as we got in 6 days of intensive work on the car. From basically a shell with the front end and differential installed to this. We were pretty pooped by Friday and only got a few things done but we are close now. Mostly only little things left to go. I hope to have her on the road in 2 or 3 months. Then she'll be rolling down the highway. I can hardly wait. Heres the last pics I took on Saturday morning. I hope you enjoy them.

    A Minor Update

This is a minor update. Although Tom & I did get a lot of work done last weekend. We mounted the shifter and the ARA center console, installed the window hardware and door handles, so now the doors actually will shut. We also hooked up and installed the tail lights except for one, b/c I broke the side marker and will have to glue it back together. We also got the foot pump for the windshield washer put in and hooked up to the bottle. And put the Blitz emblem on the nose. All that while not seeming to be much took 1/2 of Sat and 1/2 of Sun to accomplish. Inching ever closer to getting her on the road.

Yeah, we probably got them backwards, an easy fix though.

So another big update. Yesterday and today Tom & I made more progress. We got the windows installed in the doors, the steering column in and some wiring and the rest of the tailights and side markers. Oh and I also got new wheels and tires for her too. Penelope is looking hot in her new shoes, lol. Tom got more of the wiring done under the hood and we did a bunch of other little things but omg those door windows are a real pain to install, along with the rubber and felt track, geez. Anyways heres some pics, enjoy.

Where did you get those seats custom done at? I might be able to take mine there instead buying fancy racing seats. If you don't mind me asking, about how much did cost to have them upholstered?

Thx Norm but actually they were already done and Tom had them on hand when I first showed up there. I bought them the next week. For $300.00

Another update. My GT is nearly finished. Tom and I built a battery box & installed the battery. Then we had to replace the master cylinder b/c the one we had in it just wouldn't do right. The replacement worked fabulously. Finished the wiring but unfortunately we have lots of gremlins and the electrics are not working right. We took out the dashboard and went back over it but found no issues there. We plugged in another steering column, and voila, the engine turned over. But the water pump is locked up for some reason, so going further was out of the question. Time was getting short. We got the headlight rotators installed and hooked up to the cable but didn't actually install the headlight buckets. We have figured out that the electrical issues are either the steering column or in the fuse block. They will get sorted out eventually.
Today we put her on a tow dolly and drug her to my house. So now I finally have an Opel GT in my garage. I don't plan on her sitting there collecting dust either. I will be actively working on her when I am home and off the road. I expect to have her road worthy in a couple months. Then I'm gonna drive her all over the place.

Okay so this is a lousy update, no new pics and a lot of frustration and back pedaling. It turns out that the gas tank had crud in it so then I had to pull out all the back stuff, like spare tire and board and side mounts etc to remove said gas tank. Then after reading about various ways to clean it out I finally settled on a gallon of muratic acid, subsequently diluted and 5 lbs of machine screws. Then I played maraca shaker with it. I got every bit of crud and rust out of it and let it dry out in the sun. Getting every last one of those screws out was a real PIA but with magnets and effort I got them all.
Yesterday I finished reinstalling the beast and correcting the fuel lines and connectors etc. Capped off the extra vent tube on the tank, b/c its a '73 and also capped the center tube on the charcoal canister. I busted the rubber mount on the bottom of my radiator so had to call OGTS to get a new one. And ended up buying more stuff from them too. Like a locking nut for the ball stud in the bell housing, a rubber fuel line boot, and then went ahead and got the halogen headlight kit too.

    She Lives!!!!

Finally Penelope runs. James came over while we were transporting parts and reinstalled my distributor correctly and took my alternator apart and reworked it as well so now she starts, runs and charges. I still have loads of gremlins to weed out and other stuff to do but finally some progress and lemme tell you, she sounds so sweet with that uncapped header. There will be no muffler on her either, just a resonator, lol.

I suggest scrapping the resonator in favor of a split pipe concept and installing a muffler. I think a resonator ONLY will be annoying to drive. I'm using this set up with a Flowmaster and my car snarls at idle and on the low speed twisty turnies, yet quiets down nicely at highway speed with no drone. I also had some pretty nice tips installed, so maybe some of the awesome sound is from them.

I run with resonator only. It's loud at 75mph, but still not horrible. I love the sound.

There's a long story there, but I made a deal to build a GT for Mark, and then "He Who Shall Remain Nameless", lost his mind, and his Gurllfriend threatened to call the cops on me if I came over to finish the car, and I could not finish it, and live up to my obligation.

    In the process...

A one hitch, SGT in the U.S. Marine Corps, Let down a Retired U.S. Army Retired SNCO. Because of a diabetic idiot, and a skank in Houston.

"No Sir, That Just not Gonna Happen." PERIOD!

***********************I hope they both get herpes, the kind that itches.

Both them Beeyotches, him and Her!

As for Marks car, it's purty, it's sweet, and there's a whole lot of nice parts that need to get to know one another. In other words, right now it's a buncha parts, not a running, driving, parts loving each other, car.

So rather than talk about the relationship gone bad, lets talk about, "What do you do, when you get a half finished restoration." Well, Mrs Mark made coffee, and I told her, "Gimme an hour, and I'll have it running." That got me a cup of coffee and a smile.

The car is GorrJeeUs, and it's a purty Buncha Parts. So I pulled the valve cover, and number one spark plug, and screwdriver bumped it a couple times. Got it in the neighborhood of TDC on one, and pulled the distributor cover. It was not just 180 out, it was 180 and change out of time.

**** Pause*** I am gonna say this one more time, and then never mention it again.* I have lost more friends, over the years, over some beeyotch, and had good broships ruined over some skank, and this one really galls me, because like all the other times, the relationship ended with them parting ways, eventually, and in the process, a guy I was friends with, and was making money with, tossed it all over some (I promised Gary I would never type them words here) and a good broship was ruined.

That's what happened to the OpelHaus too.

RIP Tom, I won't miss you. YOUR LOSS!

    Back to Marks car.

Mark pulled the fuel pump, I pulled the dizzy, I stuck it back in, he put the fuel pump back on while I adjusted the valves, and showed him how to do it. He has solids, so he needs to know how to do it, cause with solids, you are gonna be doing it a bunch. LOL.

Then he hit it, and tried to start it. Bless his heart, Mark is going all, "We tried this, and I'm not sure about that, and he thought it would never start that easy, all I can say, is if you ever want a real friend. An ex Army SNCO is not a bad choice.

He wuz thinking, "it's not gonna be that easy," I wuz of the opinion, "this bitch is gonna start," like right now, like cats and Opels, you are gonna come around to my way of thinking.

BTW, the car was in his driveway, in Direct Sunlight, and it was not that hot, temp wize, but in direct sunlight in Texas even at the end of summer... It was hot.

Yeah, yeah, James get to the point.

So I pulled the coil wire, and it sparked one out of three times...

"F, in," Tom, put the car together enough to get the car out of his driveway, so he could move down to Houston for the honeymoon.

Okay, I will shut up about that from now on. I had a few anger issues, I am Pizzed that he put that car together enough, that he could show Mark, It's together, never mind it would never work. That was a lousy thing to do, but. I am over it now.

So I pulled the points, sanded the base plate, reinstalled the condensor, so it did not wiggle, Adjusted the points, ( Mark offered me a feeler gauge, LOL). My 60 year old eyes are shot, but I can eyeball 18 thousands.

Third time is a charm, He hit it, and... we pissed off the neighbors.

Open header Gt, yeah, it's loud.

    More to come later.

I have a bunch of Opel Junky emails to repy to.

    Bottom Line, Marks car runs.

The steering column is on the floor, but when he hits the key, it starts and rumbles.

He took me around the corner and put me up in in a motel.

Next week, I will put the headlight buckets in.

I installed fuses for his wiring harness, so he cant burn that up.

    All Good...

Installed the steering column and DROVE HER!!!!!

Thats right, she doesn't have any electrics that work worth a flip and no headlight buckets but I pulled her out of the driveway, and and took her around the cul-de-sac twice and I was like hmmmm, I'm taking her up on the road behind my house where they like to run crotch rockets at breakneck speed and see how she does.
WOW!!!!!! She pulls strong and runs like a scalded dog. My front end is all polyurethane so the steering was precise and tight. The engine just sang. Oh what a sweet tune it was too.
When I get her finished and ready for inspection, insurance & licensing and finally get to really enjoy her, it is going to be the highlight of my year.

Headlight buckets installed and she runs

Small Update! I got the headlight buckets installed and they don't look too bad. I also decided to shoot a quick video with my phone and post it on youtube. The sound quality sucks and she wasn't running right but at least y'all can see her start up.

You left out the part about...

I had to ride in your truck for two hours down there.

That I showed you how to install GT headlight buckets.

The awesome dinner your wife cooked.

The sleazy motel I had to stay at and the girl half my age who hit on me at the bar around the corner.

And I did not even have my Gt.

I just showed her a pic of it.

Not to mention the huge amount of Opel GT parts we hauled down there as well. And we still don't have all of them moved yet. We still have a ton of stuff to go thru and organize and get ready to be sold. Probably another truck and trailer load ((Ford Ranger and small U-Haul)) to bring down from Dallas to Killeen. Plus it all still has to be gone thru. But we're working on it. James has a bunch of stuff in his apartment to be disassembled and shipped and that should be happening soon.

Lots of work to be done on my car too, before she is roadworthy. Not far to go though. I need to get the new brake booster and master cylinder, electrics straightened out, an exhaust system and a few other minor things, then I can begin enjoying her. James is still working on getting his GT right and fixed so he can just drive down. It will be great to have 2 GTs sitting in my driveway.
