hey ya'll, i'm a proud new owner
i'm a newbie and felt that i should make a introduction for myself since i'll be hanging out here now i just bought a 1970 GT from a nice gentleman in the bay area. it was actually the one listed here for about $1800. cali car, only light surface rust,70k on the clock, decent interior, and brand new rims and tires, you can bet i jumped on that deal. the price was raised when i contacted him but still extremely worth it in my opinion. i just sent the check in the mail today infact (he should receive it tomorrow) and then this thursday i fly out to pick it up and drive it home. yeah!
one nice thing is i work for the airlines (casino express) and my ticket costed all of 25.00 heh heh he. this job does have it perks.
as you can tell from my screen name i plan on doing a ford 2.3T swap (very built 2.3, EASY 400hp and similar torque) but that won't be for a while since i plan on trying to thoroughly engineer it all out on paper before i cut into it. so jon.haas if you read this i would very much like to start corresponding with you to pick your brains for the details of the swap if you don't mind. yes i've been lurking for a bit and read as much as i could.
now some background, i have been looking on and off for one of these cars for a few years now. i never really knew about these cars till i found an extremely beat up one in battle mtn NV. (i live in elko) and even in its roughshod shape i still loved the lines i saw there. so here i am now i just had some spare money and figured i needed another car and it might as well be what i want. my current daily driver is a 78 toyota corolla with round about 500,000 miles on it!! i was planning on putting my 2.3T in that but like i said if i was going to do it i might as well do it in something i really like.
sorry 'bout the length but i'm pretty stoked about it right now so i'll see ya guys around.
Welcome. You are a very trusting person. I would have to have the paper and keys in my hand while handing over a check. But I'm older and crotchety . There are some VERY intelligent builders and tinkerers here, a very good brain trust. I've read quite a bit here (only been a member since June).
I had been trying to close the same deal for the last two days. I hired an agent from the Bay Area to be my eyes since I actually live in the Chicagoland area. In fact, my agent had set up a meeting on Thursday to see and evaluate the purchase. If he said it was a go, I was prepared to immediately wire the money. My agent then would have shipped the GT to me.
Good luck! Hope all works out well for you. Please keep me posted?
well i got back the other day from picking up the car and boy did i have an adventure! this is how it all went: warning looooong
my day started on thursday at about 4:15 am in the morning to get ready for my flight from elko NV to SLC everything went smoothly other than the fact of my being groggy. i made it to SLC by 7:30am and had an hour layover till the flight to san francisco. i make it in to san francisco by about 9:30 am and the PO picked me up.
when we got to his place he showed me the car for the first time and went through everything that he knew was wrong with it. whis is: few spots of rust here and there but nothing too bad, the headlight flip lever was broken off almost at the base, needed an alignment, and no E-brake cable but nothing out of proprtion to the age of the car.
well we shoot the breeze for a bit (cool guy) and i decide it about time to gt my butt on the road as i have an 10 hr road trip to make it home and i have to work the next morning. so around 12 noon is when my day took a turn for the worst.
you see i had had the car for maybe about an hour or a bit more and in sacremento is where i ran into traffic and i mean that literally, i RAN INTO traffic. it seems that during the last three months it had been sitting the brake booster had gone bad. i had kinda noticed when i pulled into the gas station that the brakes felt kinda weak and soft but just made a mental note of it. after that it was a straight shot onto the highway so i didn't have to stop and go enough to really notice. anyway, i was getting into some heavier traffic. when a car a few cars ahead of me does a quick lane change and the car directly in front of me has to slow down and stop rather quickly. (we were doing about 50-60) i was a bit behind her so i just went to come to a easy slow stop but when i applied the brakes nothing much really happened. seeing that the car was getting a lot closer i applied a bit harder, still not much. so i cursed and put the pedal as far down as i could. it wasn't enough . we ended up slapping bumpers but nothing that bad. i just scuffed the back of hers and she scraped a bit of paint off the nose of the GT. now if that isn't bad enough the PO had been cool enough to let me drive it back on his plates to save me the hassle of having to go to the DMV for a temp tag. luckily i had been smart enough to get my own insurance on the car before i left to go pick it up though. so i told her that if she decides to file it to make absolutely sure she put it against my policy.
i went to the closest auto shop i could find and had them look at it to which they told me the brake booster is most likely bad. now not havig enough cash or time (would have to order the part) to get it fixed i took back to the road a whole lot more cautiously.
everything went relatively smooth after that. until i go to about lovelock that is. this is where my exhaust decides that after 30 years its giving up the fight and shears right at the manifold collector. boy was it LOUD!! by the time i mad it to winnemucca i thought my ears were bleeding and bought some earplugs at the first shop i could find them at. after that i fed myself and hit the road again.
oh, theres still more but not much so hang on and lets see if i can wrap this up. the last encounter was around 7 or 8 pm and i was about to pass a trucker on a slight hill. i was doing about 70-75 and was about to start passing him when he suddenly decides he likes my lane more and moves on in with me still there. so i hit the brakes real hard this time and honked my horn, just barely missing putting his rear bumper into my windshield. scared the bejesus outa me!
other than that the car ran beutifiully and i made it home just fine only slightly deafened
i think the car was well worth the $2200. it does have a few spots of rust and it has been repainted at least twice (under the hood i saw what i think was the original yellow followed by a lime green and then the current red) but the tires and brand new looking pirelli p700 195 50 r15 tires with nice five spoke ROH international rims. the suspension rides nice and tight and feels like it has new springs and what not in it. the interior while not perfect is in very good shape. the car ran great down in the bay area but is having problems up where i live (about 5500ft) so i'll need to get the carb retuned ASAP also i'm going to go get the exhaust fixed here in about half an hour so that will definitely be nice. the odometer only reads 85000 miles and it seems to be genuine. i'll try to get a friends digital cam and post some pics for your guys.
