    Questionfirst gt

Hi i might be buying my first opel gt in a day or so and i dont know what to look for on a gt to tell what condition its in. Its a 1970 gt with a 1.9L engine and the car starts and drives but it idles rough and feels like its about to stall from the research that i have done and the info i have it seems like the timing is off theres a vacuum leak or there is some other ignition problem. The car has some small rust spots but seems like it was maintained it wouldnt matter anyways because i can fix almost anything myself. I also need to know what kind of rear diff it might have and what the base timing is and what the factory compression is. Any info would help.

Be sure you do a good job of looking under the car at the floor panels and inner rockers. It's a good bet that a car from the Northeast will have significant damage in those areas. Don't be fooled by undercoating, mastic, or fiberglass repairs made to these areas. These areas can be repaired, but they involve lots of labor that includes sheet metal fabrication and welding. If you have the skills to do these repairs yourself you'll be OK. But the cost of having a shop do them is prohibitive.
