It's official I'm part of the opel community

Hello everyone out there in opel world. I was looking for a cheap winter project after turning away from building a Baja from a bug. I started reading about opel’s.I decided an opel was just what I wanted. Now with out spending a lot of $$$$ to get started it was difficult. After looking for 2 months I found a 1972 4 speed opel (picture included). Well this opel has been mistreated for some time. It appears the rust is only skin deep (I hope) and the dents are from being toss around. To my surprise it runs (ok) clutch feels good and everything works except for the window wipers and the gages that someone demolished remove the radio. My plans are to total gut the car and switch from white interior to black and go back to the original yellow color with a few added flares and rims .Anyway the picture shows her home from the 4 hour journey to start a new life. I look forward to sharing and receiving info from the opel community.

Welcome. You'll find lots of help here. You WON'T find a medic, at least not one that can cure opelitis. There is no known cure.

In 1972, the yellow GT's had the White(officially called buckskin) interior. Factory interior colors other than black are more rare. Just though you would like to know before you change the interior. If you do change the interior to black, put up the salavagable pieces on sale here or E-bay.

Just an informational post on the buckskin interior. OGTS sells new seat vinyl in all of the stock colors so you can replace them if you want for the same price as black.

I will say this, used black pieces are more available and less expensive. I have a set of black arm rests in my inventory if you want them. Let me know.

Just wanted to chime in on the interior color. Many of us own these cars in part because we like to drive something that you will rarely see on the road. My GT has the white interior and has been the only such GT even at Opel only events. IMHO you should try to keep the current color. It stays cooler in the sun too.

I have a couple of sun visor brackets that could be in the mail shortly.......

Oh ok, you mean the aquisition price. HE HE now the fun begins and the wallet is drained. Do a search for a thread on how much people have invested in their Opels. I personally will have umpteen thousands in mine when its all done. But again, it's worth it.

Welcome. You'll get a lot of help from the folks on this forum. They always are willing to lend some advice on how to approach a problem, and they never ask for anything in return. Such a deal! It'll be the cheapest part of the resto. Good luck on your winter project.

You're right about interior colors other than black being much rarer, but the Buckskin interior in my '73 Rallye Gold GT is more tan in color than anything else . . . not even close to looking "white"!

You are correct. I don't know the official name of the tan interior but buckskin is the "white" material. I did buy some white vinyl from a fabric shop and it is whiter than my "buckskin". Go fugure

funny you should mention color options, I have been sorting through the shop and have a pile of buckskin pieces destined for the dump. I like the color but alas no car for them.

    Nobody

Which buckskin do you have. The white buckskin or the darker beige buckskin?

I'm always looking to increase my inventory

I took the day off and went fishing in the morning than chipped away on the opel.I cleaned the door panels and seats. All in all with a little sewing it might look alright so i might go with the buckskin for awhile...can't make up my mind. oh i'm missing the passenger door pull.
