    Got Red?

My “new” 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe with 16K miles on it just arrived.

At $24K, it cost me more than the purchase price of all the cars I’ve owned since 1977 COMBINED. And it was still a bargain! They only made about 1267 of these and there’s virtually no way it can go down in value unless I drive the heck out of it or screw it up.

I plan on changing the nose and the hood to something more gnarly. There’s a number of cool kit things you can do to these, including a nose that makes it look like a Cobra. I’ll give you guys links and pics to those later on.

For now, I’ll let you ponder my apparent lack of imagination when it comes to selecting colors to paint my cars……..

    More kit pics and conversions:

This is probably just a concept that only exists in a computer. It’s called the “Pit Bull”:

This is what is referred to as a “Skystice”. It’s the body panels from the windshield forward from a Saturn Sky(the Euro New Opel GT Roadster) installed on a Solstice. To extend the cut outs on the sides, the doors need to be modified.

Here’s a link to a video of a jacked up “Solbra”(terrible name, I prefer “Cobrice” or “Cobrace”):

First off, you are a GIANT show-off.

OK, I have that out of my system.

    Just a word of advice/caution.

Whatever changes you make, SAVE the pieces you remove. Put them away somewhere safe.

I have gone to enough auto swap meets and heard enough people talk about how they don't like modifications.

Custom bikes are the worst for this. A custom bike may look cool and cost 3 times what the bike originally cost, but go to sell the bike and you can realize you just burned thousands of dollars and can hardly get blue book for it.

Are mods cool? Yes, but they limit your potential sale on the back end.

On another note. The "concept" looks like something from the Cars movie
Opel GTs are not GM products

If you are wanting to have the value only increase...then leave it alone and don't do all the radical modifications. If you don't care about long term value, then go nuts!

It is a great looking car

I love that RK Sport front end and hood. The car looks 100% nicer. Go for it Gordon!

Yes, that RK Sport thing is a nice front end. It's reasonably priced, too. The Solstice is TOO smooth and contoured up front and needs some vents and edges to give it some balls. I'm still searching. I will save the old front end parts if I do decide to change things. I'm in no hurry and I have spent a lot of money this year, so I can wait a year or more before I do anything.

I've decided that the Baron has to go. I will go back to my original plan which was to strip it to finish the GTX and for spare parts and then sell the RB's body. My Ford Escape, the GTX, and the new Solstice are more than enough cars for a single guy who lives in a row house and doesn't actually like to drive all that much(too much traffic where I live)! Basically, I have to focus on making the custom dash for the GTX this year. That job is holding everything up and should have been started last Fall. Once that is done I can put the wiring, and all the parts back on the car(cannibalized from the Baron).

Aarrgghh! The oil pan is leaking on the Baron's 2.4. A lot. It's going to have to be redone. It will have to wait. I just need to get my butt to Carlisle and then I can deal with it later. You Northbound guys can follow my trail of oil drips to the show.

    Recall

Check with PO regarding recall. Originally, they stated that the recall only affected the Solstice up to 2007, which was great since mine is an '08. However, I got a recall notice in the mail last week stating that it had been extended to 2008-2010 Solstices as well. To make it even better...... they do not have the parts to do the recall so who knows when I can get it fixed.

Any GM dealer should be able to run the VIN for recall info and whether or not the 'repair' has been done.

Leave it alone is my vote. Get out and drive it a little, enjoy a road trip or two. We only live once.

I found it curious that this car was up on Ebay just 2 days ago. Was he planning to have the delivery truck turned around if he found a higher bidder (I believe he wanted 24 grand...) then what you offered? (His blue Coupe was in the background of his driveway, same seller that you dealt with)

Many, many congratulations. She's a beauty. I wish you nothing but the best with her, Gordon.

    Gordo’s Opel Mish-Mash Projects

I’ve been spending some time on the Pontiac Solstice Coupe part of the Solsticeforum.com website. I’m called “SolstOpel” on that website and my thread is called “New Member to “Opelize” His Coupe!”. The guys there(and Norbert) have helped me find the best currently available kits from various venders. Like all my Opel-related cars, I have decided to do a mash-up of different kits and themes on my Coupe.

    My mash-up history:

The Red Baron combined Opel GT’s with The Red Baron, the World Wars, and love for things German.
The Red Baron’s Frankentrailer combined Opel GT’s, the Red Baron and WW1 aviation in general.
The GTX will combine Opel GT’s, Ferrari Dino’s, with probably some Red Baron sprinkled here and there.
The Solstice Coupe will combine parts of various available kits, Opel GT’s, and a dusting of Red Baron stuff.
And, of course, my own whackadoodle thinking and sense of humor permeates them all.

I’ve got a lot of pics to post to illustrate where I’m going, so hold your breath:

    My plain Coupe front end

Coupe with old GT look done by Norbert

New and old Opel GT mish-mash photoshopped by a crazy German

With new GT grill bar mounted high

    With grill bar mounted low

To save time and me posting 100 pics, go to this website where I will be acquiring most of the kit stuff I’m going to show you:

    Pontiac Solstice at Norm's Fiberglass

Here are the links to the 2 photo albums that I am posting the relevant pics from websites and elsewhere to:

    https://www.opelgt.com/forums/members...e-coupe-2.html

    https://www.opelgt.com/forums/members...ice-coupe.html

For now, let’s just focus on the nose panel.. First off, I absolutely HATE cars that have Karmann Ghia-like front ends. I LOATH the look of the Solstice front ends because they look Karmann Ghia-ish to me. Apparently I’m not alone and there are 5-6 different styles of aftermarket front ends to choose from. You’ve seen the pics earlier in this thread of the RK Sport front end and you can peruse the front ends available from the Norm’s Fiberglass link I gave you. I don’t want to make the front end of my Coupe sharp and edgy, like a GT, but I do want to mimic a few design details of the GT front ends. The wide oval “smile” of the grill and the 2 flat rectangular vents in the nose panel are desired, but I’m dubious about a chrome bumper/grill bar feature. If I can work a blitz/grill bar into the design that looks professional I will, but if it looks corny I won’t.

Of the available kits, Norm’s Ferrari F430 front end appeals to me the most and helps tie in my GTX’s Ferrari them(I always have to figure in the overall big picture theme to both my current cars). Sure, I could cut or have made a front end that has a big wide oval opening “smile”, but I live in New Jersey and Jersey requires nice obnoxious front license plates that totally fluck up the airflow and styling of GT front ends. They don’t do much to help the Solstice’s front end and the various kit ones either. One way or the other, the center of the nose I choose will be obscured by a cheesy yellow/white Jersey plate. So there’s no point in me having a custom nose with a wide oval grill made ‘cuz the center is going to be blocked by the Jersey plate. The F430 nose’s grill openings are sort of wide and old Opel GT-ish and the license plate blocks or hides the center vent. It’s cheaper to buy an existing front end design, so I think the F430 is the way to go.

For the 2 flat rectangular vents, there are 3 hoods(RK Sport’s and 2 from Norm’s) that feature 2 flat rectangular vent/scoops. I’m pretty undecided on which to choose. Go totally gnarly with the “Formula” hood:

A tamer version of the above called the “GTO” hood:

The smooth clean lines of the RK Sport one:

    Which one should I choose?
