At this point I'd like to ask for a little help in the form of reading the draft (attached) and helping me with corrections and information I don't yet have.

I've highlighted in yellow areas where I know work is needed.

I've been able to find information on many but not every National.

I'm collecting photos and illustrations but haven't inserted any yet.

I'd really like to be able to list the awards presented each year. If I can't get all, or most of them, I may cut that part. Better to omit it than publish something half done.

Thanks in advance. I'll credit you in the article and if you want to write or rewrite a section you'll be a co-author, which is nice to have when you go up for tenure review.

I'm kinda burning out on this one. Will take a few days off.

Mike, I'm sending you a PM with winners for the 2008 Nationals in Charlotte along with a few other things. I'll see what I can find about the 2014 Nationals and PM that as well...

Thanks. I've got that information in now.

    The update is attached.

I still have a lot more territory to cover.

The Google search feature is not working today so I'm stopped in my review of past posts. I was on page 5 of 10. The normal search turns up only 12 posts with "Nationals" used as a search term for titles, and I've see those threads before. There is a lot of information in these forums, but it can be tough digging it out.

I'm thinking of adding a "Car Count" column to the table, but first let's see what I can learn about the years I haven't covered yet.

What is the plan for the nationals for the next five years? When and where? I'll list them in the table.

Gil and I are beginning to discuss 2020 in earnest. Who wants to go to Yosemite?

Don't look for any car awards at the GA Nationals as we took a different route, just wanted everyone to come down and relax. The only award given out was for furthest distance traveled, that went to Bill Hoffman. We did take a couple of nice drives, planned by Steve Goines. There was a *ahem* visit by a certain helicopter pilot, in his "special" vehicle LOL. There are a couple of youtube videos done by Dieter that you can look up and enjoy.

I have been going back thru some of the old Mother Road threads, which has been interesting. In paragraph 5 you mention the photos of the group on Route 66. Those photos were taken by Gil Wesson while perched on a Railroad overpass. I think that year Dallas Mize took some video while sitting with Gil. Trying to stage the Convoy to downtown Saturday on a regular year is like herding cats. Those pictures increased the difficulty by maybe a factor of 5. Gil also took the photos from the same place at the 2013 Nationals as well as other great shots. The photo you use to promote OGTS in the Blitz was taken by Gil of the Downtown Line Up that same year.
Speaking of Gil, I see you give him a tip of the hat at the end of the article. From my point of view Gil has been a major supporter of the Nationals from early on. Not only does he try to attend them all, he also contributes OGTS Goodies that often help cover the cost of putting on the event.
As to some things about Awards. 2007 was a combination of the Awards given out now on both Saturday and Sunday. The Awards that are now part of the Sunday Main Stage Presentation, were given to us to pass out on Saturday. We added to that a new design we now use for Saturday Participant Voting. The list of those who got the awards and a photo of the group is on page 11 of the thread for that year in the forums. The list of winners you have for 2013 are the ones for the Event Awards from Main Stage Sunday. The list for Participant Voted Saturday Awards is as follows. The Tom Cavataio Longest drive in an Opel went to Marty Remier, TX.
    Best GT, Don Harrold, MO.
Best Manta/ Ascona, Jeff Widder, WI.
    Best Kadett, Tom King, MO.
Best Opel Other, Dieter GV. Mainberg.

Going back thru those old threads it was fun to read what was going on leading up to the event. Also the really great photos. Unfortunately it was also sad to see how many of those old posts are now followed by R.I.P.

Anyway anything else I can look for let me know.

OpelJohn - Thanks. I'll work those details in. And thanks for your recaps. Very interesting and very helpful.

Everyone else, I could use help with the years I don't have anything, or much. Just point me to a thread and I'll extract what I can. Like I mentioned above, Google search is not working here as of a few days ago.

I could also use help with the awards. I'll contact Gil to get the list from the OMC events. I've gone through back issue of The Blitz and they rarely reported the awards.

Okay, I have manually gone through the events forum and found a little more information, but not much. Here's what I am still looking for:

Recaps or just something that tells people about the event for the years: 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 (I have a little, but barely anything.), 2011, 2014, 2016.

    For the awards I am still looking for: 2005, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017.

If anyone has any old notes or knows how to find the thread with the info I'd much appreciate it.

Am not sure, but 2016 Opel National's held in Carlisle was 20th Anniversary was probably one of the rainy Carlisle that we all know about,, I think Todd Kirby took trophy for Best Manta, Gordon for Most Unique Opel, Bill Hoffman farthest driven, not sure on the others.. oh yea also
Mike Lane for Best GT. I think Charles has the line up here the link of photos he took that day

I do not think they gave out Awards at the 2010 event in Monterey. Since 2015 was an OMC event there may not have been any then either.

As to the 2013 event Awards, You already show on page 15 paragraph 12 the winners of the Official Event Judged Opel Class. Along with that I gave you a list of the Saturday Participant Voted Awards in post 25 of this thread. That year was interesting in the diversity of the two groups line of thought. More often than not at least both agree on Best GT.

Going back to the 2010 Event. I am aware of the Awards situation due to the fact I drove my GT over 4600 miles to attend that event. I have such great memories as, having the exhaust pipe break between Cheyenne and Laramie WY. Getting a thumbs up from a couple in a Ferrari in CA north of the event. Leaving early so I could climb out of Donner Pass at midnight to beat the heat. Driving across NV until noon and getting a room until midnight so as to beat the heat once again climbing out of UT. Then having the Exhaust break again between Laramie and Cheyenne. Fun Times!

Today Gil and I talked about the 2020 nationals. We have a plan. We need to run it past the officers but I expect they will support us.

In a nutshell, home base will be the casino in Tuolumne, CA, just a few miles from OGTS. The show will be a OGTS. We will also cruise to and through Yosemite. Several routes are being considered, one to Glacier Point, which would include a tour of the valley. The other route is longer and would take us through the high country, done to Lee Vining/Mono Lake, then back to Tuolumne via Sonora pass. Both are fantastic drives, and I am partial to the latter.

So that’s it for the time being.

Of course the Nationals committee would have to approve our proposal.

Who’s on the slate for 2021 and beyond?

When is a good time for everyone. Right now we're thinking late-August.

The 50Manta will most likely be in April/May.

It would be cool if the nationals was split between the western and eastern half of the US. I drove out to Jeane, NV for the 50th and that was pretty cool even though I didn't own a GT yet. Vegas would be great for a Nationals someday in the future, if planned far enough in advance to secure a good hotel with proper accommodations for the cars at a reasonable price. I saw a car show in Laughlin by accident once and it went really well, everything was relaxed and cheap.

I'd love to see Albuquerque host an Opel event, the Unser Racing Museum would be perfect. I don't think it will ever happen though due to everyone having to pull off a long drive to New Mexico. A drive to Sandia Crest is incredible, with 11 switchbacks and 4 more gentle corners on a 6 mile stretch of mountain road that climbs 3,800 ft in elevation. It's a blast on the way down but you better have good brakes and tires. It doesn't take long to make a drive north and see some beautiful canyons and a couple tunnels. In 3-3.5 hours you're in Colorado. Albuquerque was also part of the Route 66, and we have some spots that pay tribute to it. While a little difficult for a car meet due to parking limitations, the 66 Diner is truly amazing and no one can visit Abq in a classic car without going there. The Owl Cafe is a great spot too and works well for car shows, they host a hot rod show once a year. I'd be happy to help setup a future meet here, if there was enough interest to actually get Opels out here. All you Cali folks would love the slower, easier, and cheaper life out here. Oh... and we are the green chile capital of the world. If you like spicy food, green (and red) chile is amazing. It makes a spicy dish just right, most New Mexicans are addicted to it. I could go on, it would be easy to create an itinerary for an extended weekend like Memorial day weekend. I often cut down New Mexico as being ugly and boring, simply because I grew up here but there really is a lot to do if you're visiting and a local gives you stuff to do and see. The White Sands (look it up if you don't know it), the Trinity test site, Roswell (LOL, that town is a trip), International Balloon Fiesta, the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, Albuquerque and Santa Fe's Old Towns, Carlsbad Caverns, and the Aztec ruins to name a few other interesting places for anyone who visits.

In a sense they are split east and west, just not both coasts each year. OMC handles the western Nationals every 5 years, never in the same place, others hold them in fixed locations back east and mid-west, once in a while at a new location, such as Georgia or Tennessee.

I have connections at the Unser Museum. Bernhard, who races with us when he is in the country, is a personal friend of Al. Bernhard was wrangling to get the Tinyvette on display at the museum.

Trinity Site has long been on my bucket list of things to see, but it is only open to visitors two days a year. It is a hard window to hit.

I lived about 80 miles away from Trinity Site (Alto, NM) for 9 years and never remembered the date in time to go (usually within a week AFTER the date)! -- Doug

FWIW - I did have a neighbor there whose uncle was driving down the road (US54?) early that morning and saw the fireball (and probably "felt" the radiation)! He said the local news announced that a "fuel supply" on the base had exploded. I guess you could claim that U235 is a "fuel"?

Albuquerque... Here I Come ! A last minute road trip will have me in ABQ Monday afternoon
thru Wednesday mid day July 22-24. I'm camping at a budget place on Central Ave, near I 25.
Most of my time will be exploring attractions within walking distance along Central Ave.

Years ago (the 70s) I visited White Sands, took the tram to Sandia peak, more recently was in
Carlsbad caverns, and have driven I 40 several times crossing the country.
This time I want to see some local stuff including Rt 66 Neon like I did in Tucumcari 2 years ago.

Autoholic, maybe our paths will cross. I will pm my phone #. I was at GT50 also, without my GT
but didn't meet everyone there, and honestly can't remember everyone anyway.

Roy, I'm free the whole time you're here. I think I know the place you're staying at... Central has a lot of attractions, but many of the hotels / motels on that road can be sketchy. I don't know of any other Opelers in Abq. Until I buy a house (hopefully within a year) I can't be a home base for visitors but I'm happy to show people around when I'm free. There is a place on Central with a really cool Route 66 neon sign, but it's on the west side of town. After I'm done with restoring / redoing my GT sometime in the future, I want to go park it under that sign late at night and have a small photo shoot. It would have to be really late, because the sign crosses over Central and it's not really legal or friendly to block a bus lane. If you are willing to spend a little cash, we have hot air balloon rides around the year. I see them during my morning drive to work.
